Default Looking a new small welder

I'm going to be upgrading my little Lincoln Weldpak HD; now that I weld quite often, I have found the limit of it pretty often.

I want something a little bigger, that can weld some bigger stuff; but I'd like to keep 115v and not go up to 220v. I am not looking at a $1,500+ welder, more in the $600-$700 range. I'd like to go gas, cause I've never been happy with flux core; but that could be my welder itself.

Currently I am looking at a Lincoln WeldPak 140 and a Hobart Handler 140.

Both are 115v, both come with fluxcore and MIG wire, and have the regulator to run gas. Both have good reviews from what I see. I have a friend that has the Lincoln and he built a boat hoist pontoon with it, so I know it'll weld anything i'd want to weld. Basically only main difference seems to be price.

Any experience with the Hobart welder? I don't know much about Hobart stuff. Just looking at reviews and price; I found the Hobart 140 for $500, so almost $100 cheaper than the Lincoln. Though Lincoln is a great brand that I've ahd good experience with.

Both will be good machines, and I really don't know why, but I'd lean towards the Hobart. Maybe it's because I like Millers, but I have both red and blue, and have no problemswith either..

I've had the Hobart for a couple years now. Nice metal drive system, 5 power settings instead of 4, it's been a decent little machine. My only complaint would be that it only has a 10 or 15 percent duty cycle. I think if I did it again, I would go for the Miller that's a little step up from the Hobart. Don't recall the model, but it had an infinite power adjustment and a higher duty cycle, I want to say it was convertible between 110 and 220 too. Iirc it was $700 to $800 then. At the time I was really thinking I wanted to save the extra couple hundred, but now, I think it would definitely be worth it.

I've got a Hobart handler 180 or 185, can't remember off hand. I've had it over 12 years and is a great machine.


I find it is perfect for anything I've ever needed it for and on a few large projects I've done with it the extra amperage, vs the 140 is nice to have.

I got the Hobart 140 and itís a great little machine, Iíve probably ran close to 100lb wire through it in 10 years and no major issues, Iíve had it shutdown a couple times from overheating but thatís after long use, but it always works great once cooled down, only real issue is the gas regulator, the adjustment knob turns very easy and seems to always be outta adjustment when I get it out but it does sit close to the air compressor so the vibration from it must move the reg. Built both my rigs and my brothers and itís still going strong

Why do you want to stay at 120v? If you are maxing out the one you have, you will likely max out a gas version as well. I also started with the Weldpak, the whole flatfender was that weldpak on a 100' extension cord and flux core.

I now have a lincoln 180HD. It won't do everything, but it will do 90% of everything we do on our jeeps for $710 and will give you the thicker metal capability you are looking for.

It's relatively inexpensive, and the extra budget could go to adding a 220v outlet that you will use for other stuff too.

Main reason was just 220v availability. Right now, the only 220v circuit in my garage is for our well pump. we don't use it as we have city water now, but i'd like to keep it available, plus there's only 2 extra spots in the sub panel to add more circuits and I plan to dedicate one to run out to our barn when it's ready. I am not running 220v out there. I want to be able to move the welder to use in the barn if the need arises.

I believe i'm maxing out my little welder because it's only 88amp max. I know what the linclon 140 will weld, and it is more than i'll need it to. Just looking at the Hobart (or even a comparable miller) as another option

Can't go wrong with any of the big 3 brand stuff really. I did my research and bought a Hobart Handler 210 about 12 years ago because it was the best bang for the buck. It's been absolutely fantastic and has built A LOT of stuff with almost zero issues. I think a year or two in I had the gas solenoid stick open due to debris(grinding dust probably). Quick and easy fix and it's been flawless ever since. I've done a ton of welding with it and have never hit the duty cycle cutoff.

I would HIGHLY recommend looking at the newer Hobart 210MVP welder they have. It's well worth the added cost now for the added capability later. It'll run off 115V or 230V so you can use it as-is for now, then upgrade later when you inevitably realize you need more juice. Buy it nice or buy it twice. I'd recommend the 190A version to save some coin, but it doesn't have the dual voltage option(neither does my older 210). I got mine at TSC, they occasionally have sales where you can get about $100 off on a lot of the welders, so keep your eyes peeled.

If you have a 220v circuit in the garage I wouldn't even consider using anything less. I would just unplug the well pump when you need to weld and give it hell.

Also I ran my welder off a generator for the first year I owned it since I didn't have a 220v drop. If you have to weld in the barn run it off a generator outside assuming you have one or could borrow one when needed .

that's not a bad idea, It wouldn't be that hard to rerun the outlet for it. I am considering getting the 210MVP Hobart, I like that I can go from both voltages; so I can still use it in the barn.

I could justify the extra expense, like it was said, buy right the first time.

I've had a lot of garbage smaller welders. One of the nice things about using crap welders is that it makes you learn how to weld fairly well.

I'm not a good weldererer.

I mostly use flux core with straight CO2. A lot of out of position welding. So that should be our reference that I'm far from an expert.

I used to have a Hobart 187 at one time. It welded better than my limited skill. But that was a long time ago and I think I paid like $900 for it. I think the 190 replaced it but I wouldn't buy one now. Probably would get an ESAB at that price point.

Last Fall I bought a Miller Multimatic 215 with addon tig kit and a Millermatic 252 with the standard m25 and an alumapro air cooled pushpull gun.

I think I paid just over $1000 for the standard 215 after rebates, Baker's Bucks, credit card rewards, and shit from Baker's Gas. Later sold the TIG kit I got for free for $300 but that isn't relevant. The 215 is worth every penny if you can get it for say $1200 or less after rebates and crap. Autoset is what makes it superbly awesome. Best thing for idiot welders that don't clean their material well enough, weld all over the place (it's light as it is an inverter welder), and largely just don't know what they're doing. Saves a lot of setup time and grinding due to fuckups. Set it to about what you think it should be and it'll change it for you as you're welding.

If I had known the 215 was so awesome I probably wouldn't have bought the 252. I went in to get the 252 and alumapro and was talked into buying the 215.

I mostly use the 215 for stainless nowadays but once in a while I change it over to fluxcore. Wire changes are stupid simple in it. And it is portable. My 252 never leaves 20' from the receptacle.

My only complaint for the 215 is that it has a crap ground lead and it uses the baby dinse connector.

It does steel tig and stick. Works fine for both of those things. So if you are desperate you can clean up garbage MIG welds with TIG.

The 215's duty cycle is decent but it still can't keep up with me on 1/4"+ steel. Probably somewhere around a real-world 50% duty cycle on clean 1/4" steel unless ambient temperature is low. It will do 3/8" but the torch overheats pretty quick and not long after so does the power source. So I mostly use the 252 with the normal M25 torch on steel. Wish it had Autoset like the 215.

I probably only have about 20lbs of wire through the 215. I've even run a few pounds of flux core stainless (309) wire through the 215. Probably another 40lbs through the 252. So, not an expert and haven't been using them that long.

Oh, and run at least 10/3 out to the barn. Even my 215 wide open only uses ~25amps at 220v. It won't weld anything thicker than 3/16" on 110v.

I have a bunch of twist-lock 10/3 (L6-30) cables for running the 215 all over the yard or off the generator. Most of the time I can run it on a 20 amp 220 circuit for 1/4" and 5/16".

Autoset is like Tnge txt wrds 4 wldrs 2 b cool af cept 4 if smrt ppl round 4 reel they know u r dum n need autocorrect to make your welds look OK.

Damn, going from my $600 idea up to $1,200????

IF there's one way to up a budget, it's to ask for suggestions

I believe I am going to go with the Hobart 210MVP. I like that I can use both 110v and 220v; i'm not going to be running 220v out to our barn, so I will still have to option to use 110v out there.

Going to put up my little lincoln for sale and put that money towards a new welder.

Definitely this... it is easy enough to swap it back, especially if the well pump currently is not being used at all for anything.

I also had a 110 mig welder. I think it was a 140 Hobert. It welded alright but was not any good at thicker stuff. Very pleased with my Hobart 190 that we now have. Much better welds on anything thicker than sheet metal.

Actually need to order a 10 pound spool of wire for it. Anyone have good choices for where to buy the consumables?

Yep, the more I think about it, and read responses from here; I think it's worth the investment to buy the 210MVP, or similar over a set one.

I have been buying my welding supplies from TSC. I like their stuff and it works well. Other than that, amazon

I was going to get some at TSC on Sunday. They were sold out. So, I had to put flex core in and make due. Now I have time to order it if need be. Might use amazon...
