You can't really like DeVos though. Imagine what will happen to the price of soap...

i'd rather have to buy a 20 dollar bar of soap, then not have a job.

DeVos will not lower minimum wage and soap won't cost $20 (well the stuff kelly buys might), cost of living will go up the same as it does every year no matter who is in the govener seat.

DeVos just wants people to actually want to come to this state for something other than make fun of it

the entire country had averaged 3% gain in jobs over the last 2 years.. Michigan has averaged loosing a worker every 10 minutes for the last 2 years.

Granholm hasn't done one thing to help out this state... unless I am wrong, and missed something.

The only thing that would stop DeVos from winning come election time is class warfare. Granholm and all the (especially from wayne and monroe counties) will advertise that DeVoss has alot of money.. That immediatley pisses off alot of people.

A recent DeVos ad, where the candidate for governor claims he is responsible for the re-development of downtown Grand Rapids, has caused a bit of a stir. The state Democrats are saying that DeVos is pulling the ad.

An article about the ad from the GR Press via Michigan Live:

Visonary or revisionist? Dick DeVos a major player, but some say ad goes too far
Friday, April 07, 2006
By Ted Roelofs
The Grand Rapids Press

The latest TV spot by GOP gubernatorial candidate Dick DeVos comes with a bold claim:

"Dick DeVos turned Grand Rapids around," it states on an introduction to the ad on the candidate's Web site.

The 30-second ad, which first aired around the state last week, contrasts a bleak black-and-white city -- empty, crumbling buildings -- that morphs into a colorful metropolis, with shots of the Amway Grand Plaza, the downtown campus of Grand Valley State University, Van Andel Arena and DeVos Children's Hospital.

Stung by Criticism, DeVos Pulls Misleading TV Ad

Father says ad takes “political license” with the truth

LANSING-Responding to a barrage of criticism about its accuracy, including from his own father, GOP gubernatorial candidate Dick DeVos today pulled his TV ad taking credit for revitalizing downtown Grand Rapids. Numerous media outlets, former employees and Richard DeVos Sr. said that Dick DeVos was exaggerating the facts. DeVos Sr. said his son took “a little political license” in taking credit for the revitalization. In his new ad “Back to Work,” DeVos again tries to mislead and deceive the public. He claims he was a successful businessman when he has record of cutting Michigan employees and claims he has a vision for Michigan when he still doesn’t have an economic plan or a solution to any problem facing the state.

Common democratic method of election, don't say what you are going to do for the state, just pick apart your opponent. :tonka:

Heres some positive stuff:

For a Democratic political strategist, it's seems like a gift from the gods -- a big business, Republican gubernatorial candidate who created jobs in China while trimming back operations in Michigan.

That ought to make Dick DeVos the personification of the evils ravaging Michigan, the leader of the club of greedy executives who exchange state jobs for cheaper labor and fatter profits.

And it ought to give the Dems the perfect campaign hammer to pound DeVos with before an electorate that is scared to death of globalization.

Except for two things: (1) It isn't true; and (2) what the Democrats see as a negative -- DeVos' international experience -- is in fact the expertise Michigan needs to transform its economy.

No jobs went to China

Yes, DeVos' family company, Alticor, does a thriving business making and selling Amway products in China. And yes, DeVos was the architect of the company's global expansion.

But not a single Michigan job was lost because of that investment. Alticor's China factory serves only China and doesn't export products to the United States.

But the Chinese business has created 300 jobs in Ada, Alticor's headquarters. Michigan workers support the China market with product research, engineering, technical, accounting and legal services, and they wouldn't be in Michigan if Alticor wasn't in China.

DeVos confirms that at the same time the company was moving into China, Alticor shed some U.S. jobs as it adopted efficiency measures and a revamped management structure. If you work in Michigan, you've likely been through that a time or two.

The result of the restructuring, and the expansion into China and other world markets, is a much healthier Michigan company, one that is creating high-skilled jobs here and contributing more to the tax base.

Mich. must go global

There's a lesson in the Alticor experience for Michigan companies and Michigan voters. Globalization shouldn't be dreaded, it should be exploited.

"As a state, we have to engage the global marketplace," DeVos says. "There is no alternative, no choice but to go out and win. The antagonists to this position see it as either/or -- either you invest in China or invest in Michigan. Most businesses do both. If your sales increase in any part of the world, the folks back home benefit."

The Democrats' China paranoia is damaging to Michigan.

They're inflaming fears that our future will be limited by our past. That we can't compete in the world marketplace. That where others find opportunity, we'll find only disappointment.

Voters rarely resonate to such hopelessness.

DeVos' China venture isn't something he needs to defend. It's something to brag about.

He has proven he understands the economic dynamics of the 21st century. He has faced firsthand the challenges of the global economy and succeeded.

Sounds just like what Michigan's been looking for.

yeah, i don't think that the fact that he made stuff up in his ads is a reason to not vote for him, but it does make him look kind of stupid. There's nothing I like better than a republican that looks stupid. I don't really mind regular though, it's the evangelical republican right wingers that I really like to make fun of.

I am a blue color worker.
I make good money, but not easy money, I work my ass off, sweat my ass off, do more than I need to do. And I pay more in taxes than 80% of the rest of america. Most of those taxes, are imposed by the democratic fed and state govnmnt. then tere is what I get taxed on while buing thigs in michigan. I hate big government. I hate big spending. I hate comunism and social government (our own "democratic" government), smaller is better, let me earn my own money and keep it, and tax those that don't pay shit for taxes!!!
