Default Child booster law

I have finally installed a rear seat in my cj5 so I could take all 3 kids for rides. All the seats come with what was standard equipment back then, lap belts only.

The new law requires all kids under certain age/height to be seated in a booster seat. This is done so that a shoulder belt rests on a kid's shoulder instead of the neck. Good. But what is the purpose of booster seat if you only have lap belts?

I called SOS and they told me that although I can drive with lap belts only, I still need to have booster seats for my children.

I find this very unsafe, as it raises the child to the point where the lap belt rests on their legs instead of their waist. Also in a case of a rollover, they would be safer if they were seated lower.

I hate stupid laws...

I am thinking the same thing in my TJ.
Seems like my 6yr olds shoulders are much higher than the back of the seat when in the booster--that seems less safe to me.
There is no support behind here head or shoulders.

I would talk to the MSP before believing anyone at the SOS myself. I had thought the booster seat only applied in instances where it was a shoulder/lap combination.

I would call your local state police post first. Then threaten to rape everybody at the post. That's probably your best option.

so mount the booster seat on the floor.

motor vehicle code mandates seat belts, but nothing about seats.

shame hombre didn't offer actual input in this application.

makes me wonder if the new law was written not realizing there are still vehicles out there with lap belts only and low back seats.

My input? They pass dumb-ass laws, with lots of gray areas all the time. There. That's my input.
