Default MMA for children

They were talking about it on ESPN yesterday. Couldn't hear what they were saying, but they were showing footage and it looked pretty awesome.

The kids looked like they were age 8 and up. Fighting in age/weight classes, but also boys fighting girls. Small gloves and mouth guards only.

Right, wrong or who cares?

Kids that age can join Karate comp. and it is hitting and kicking. So what is the differance? I say let em do it. As long as the reff is treating it like they are kids and not adults.

I couldn't hear what they were saying, but it looked like they were comparing it to karate, but they never showed the kids making contact during karate.

When I took karate way back when it was contact matches. I was kind of short for my age at the time. I kept kicking my opponents in the nuts. I won every match

I think it's f*cked up and will encourage kids to fight at school. 15 or 16 would be a better age to start that, not 5 or 6. Same deal as not letting kids start weightlifting until they're older because their bodies aren't ready for it. Those are some big blows.

It's NOT like karate - in karate they don't let the kids sit there and pound on a kid who's on his back on the ground.

Personally as a 15 year old. if there was a place around me that did MMA, I would have started when I was 10 or 11. Most parents are seeing it kind of as an anger source and that they think it will cause their kids to fight more. thats not the case, in school I have seen the exact opposite. Guys that do boxing, karate, kick boxing, ect. almost never fight. And all the kids that never have other opperunities to outlet their anger are always ready to take someone on because they feel they need to.

I think it's a good way to teach self defense and get them ready for the real world and to be able to overcome challenges they might not have been able to before training.

As to the age issue, 6 and 7 year olds is just ridiculous, they are still growing, their bones aren't strong enough yet, and mentally they aren't prepared to take a full on beating. I think that it should only start to get taught once a child in middle school age, so about 11-12 years old.

But what do I know, I'm only 15.

It is no differant than any martial art. I do mma and it releases the agression. Not allowing you to apress the agression. Which in some cases can help a kid that has high amounts of agression in them. I would rather my kid fight where some one has a close eye on them and it also teaches them to defend them selves aginst kid napers or bullies. And I know for a fact that when you put a kid in comp. for martial arts it is full combat. As to what flatblackyj said it is a little to much for growing bones ect.. But football is where a 150lb. over weight second grader tackels another player is ok. It is theri choice to play. Not saying what you think is wrong, but hockey , football are all contact sports and parents let their kids play those with out a second guess. And in alot of cases push the hardest to do more and better.

in most cases mma fighters have 2 or 3 backgrounds in different martial arts, (I.E. karate,Muay Thai, kick boxing, ect) but what my point is, is that most martial arts teach discipline and respect for each other and thats what alot of younger kids now days lack. next year ill be starting my lil girl in some sort of martial arts

Karate, wrestling and other sports are more restrained. Letting a kid wallop on another's head until there's a tap out or "knock out" isn't really safe for a developing brain. Not that football might be any better, but the helmet offers more protection.

I think that is the most fukked up thing I have ever heard of. MMA for children. I often wonder why some people in this country are so incredibly ignorant.

No new museums, not much culturally going on anywhere, so lets have them beat the dogshit out of each other. wonderful.
