I don't think it's GG. Maybe a different group?

I think that's going to be the busier of the two or three possible dates this fall. The biggest problem AND most likely why GG will not happen again this year is that there are to few people who knows the trails well enough up there. Last year we, GLFWDA, were notified that the MNR, (DNR equivalent) were going to start cracking down on usage in illegal areas. And in fact did stop at least two groups and inform us of a new enforcement initiative. These areas we only recently made illegal due the Ontario Government's declaration of the new Algoma Headwaters Provincial Park. Virtually every trail we knew and ran crossed the Goulias River OR crossed the new Wind Farm which is on the west coast overlooking Batchawana Bay west of Hwy 17.
In order to put on a successful event you need trails. right now all but two or three of our trails have been shortened, dead ended, or eliminated entirely.
For years there has been a desire among a few of us to start to venture further north. This is tough as there IS NOT a campground like Blueberry anywhere up Hwy 17. Hence, not much exploration has been done there in the last 20 years. This year there are a few of us who are going to try and change that. However, exploring new trails takes a different type of wheeler. Vehicles need to be able to traverse ANY type of trail, fix nearly ANY problem that might arise AND STAY OUT OVERNIGHT if returning to camp is not the best solution from a safety standpoint.
Those requirements don't always conjure up a 'fun ride' that is usually expected by most who go up to Canada in an 'Event' type setting. There have been numerous comments made by past GG participants who returned from a run totally disappointed that it wasn't a run to 'write home about' i.e. How many people are willing to go out and explore with the chance that you will return to camp without ever putting it in 4WD. For many, many years I and others have done nothing but explore. The return on investment for a great trail is probably less than 5%. Those who are so inclined to think this type of activity might be fun, your welcomed to PM me and I'll let you know what my plans are this year. Right now their pretty flexible.
Sorry to make this so long winded but this question comes up every year and is usually left to linger without a definitive answer.

What he said, except it was 2 years ago that the MNR started cracking down.

I plan on doing some exploring but like Jim said, it takes an attitude of "I'm just here to enjoy the bush and if I put it in 4wd, it's a bonus". There are multiple groups that I know of going up the first weekend of October. To avoid the confusion, I'll be there a different weekend. Don't confuse this with "I don't want to be there when they're there". I'm avoiding the crowd but not avoiding any particular person or group.

I always wanted to trek north to see the mid-night sun... only drive there.

Windigo Lake, ON, Canada Is as far north as I could get in Ontario via Google. Years ago I even bought an Ontario road map to see how far I could get.

Even to drive the Great Alaskan Highway would be very cool
