Default Smokie the Bear vs. ATV users - ATV users win!!

There is a new public service announcement by Smokie the Bear that has a DEFINATE anti-OHV recreation spin. And we thought Smokey was our friend.

It is filled with total mis-information and puts ATV riders (and all OHV enthusiasts for that matter) in a negative light.

The PSA announcement can be seen here:

www.smokeybear.com/

and here:

www.youtube.com/watch?v=cowvlUmXMvQ

This public service announcement NEEDS to be removed! Nearly everyone that rides an ATV or dirt bike knows that spark arrestors are MANDATORY!

Please take three minutes to use the pirate4x4.com land-use letter generator to send out your concerns about this Public Service Announcement.

Here is the link to the letter generator, it will e-mail out to several big wigs in the Forest service and the Ad Council

http://www.pirate4x4.com/letters/

THANKS!!!

PLEASE PASS THIS INFO ON!!!

Dear [Letter Recipient],

I just watched a short advertisement on smokeybear.com where a young woman/smokey infor two ATV users not to start their engines because "ATVs give off sparks and those sparks could start a forest fire".

I would like to voice my displeasure at this MISINFORMATION. Perhaps you had an ad agency write and film it for you - and they may be ignorant that all offroad ATV/ORV/Motorcycles are required to have a U.S. Forest Service approved spark arrestor (except for competition models sold for closed-course racing only). The models of ATVs used in the video short are, indeed, both offroad legal with USFS approved spark arrestors. Both models are "sport" ATVs equipped with lighting and standard wheels/tires - and therefor are SAFE.

I find this troubling. In all honesty, "Smokey the Bear" is a well-known public icon and his message has been repeated to me my entire lifetime ( I am 39 ). I see the office behind Smokey as an authority on Forest Fires, however in this case, you are clearly wrong.

I own 5 offroad motorcycles that myself and my family ride for fun; all five are equipped with a USFS approved spark arrestor and all are well below the 96dB noise limit. As an enthusiast, every year I see less land available to use for our hobby and more opponents to it.

Such respected authorities as the USFS and Smokey the Bear stating "ATV's give off sparks" as fact is disheartening, to say the least.

Sincerely,

Scooter, real NICE letter, however, the DB sound law for dirtbikes in Michigan is not 96 db..

If manufactured after 1986, it is 94db.
