Default Identity theft?

So, I just got a letter from Oakland university, apparently my SSN and contact information (address, name, etc) was 'comprimised' from their website.

I have not seen the letter, this is just what I was told from my mother where the bulk of my mail goes. She is scanning the letter and emailng it to me.

What are the proper steps to take?

Keep the BS out of this thread.

The first thing that I would do is call one of the big 3 credit reporting agencies and put a flag on your account, very simple and you can have it sent to the other 2 agencies by the one that you call. This way you get a phone call anytime someone tries to to anything involving your credit. A little bit of a hassle for you but at least you know that there isn't someone running around with a credit card in your name. Also, make sure you renew everytime before it expires from here on.

http://www.transunion.com/corporate/...ityFreeze.page

http://www.transunion.com/corporate/...audAlert.page?

Look at this as well as some of the other info on this site. Transunion is one of the 3 credit agencies.

Good Luck

Do the Fraud Alert First, it is less hassle and is free.

X2

They're obliged to provide you some services, per MI law.

I'd also sign up for identity theft insurance right away if you haven't already. Then they can take care of all the paperwork and phone calls if the worst happens. Good luck, that sucks.

I think it's more for IF your identity gets stolen to help get things back on track, not to prevent it from being stolen.

I've got a link on my work comp, I'll post it tomorrow.

So, I saw the letter today, the return address was PO Box to Portland oregon, wanted me to send my name, adress DOB and SSN to them so they can verify and help me get identity theft protection and insurance!

They said that the information was on an external hard drive that was stolen hahaha give me a F'n break.

My mother must not have read the whole letter...

hahahahah. What did I say when you told me that? It would have been huge news if a college computer system was compromised.

That is good to hear though.

hahahah I like the ending, "Yours truly Oakland University"

I cut out the part where it said to send my info to that PO Box because it had my address and stuff on it.

I am on the phone with the OU police department.. apparently it is a legit thing.

They contracted out the company ID experts to handle the incident.

That's gay.

Are you serious?

that sucks.

I should open up a Stack company right now, because i'm sure whoever stole your ID is going to have a TON of credit cards to buy shit with.
