Default Greetings from Cairo, Egypt

Greetings from Egypt!

As I mentioned a few months ago, I am visiting and touring Egypt with one of my daughters as she finishes her study abroad program.

We have completed the Nile River Boat cruise, and it was the most incredible trip, and extremely hot. It truely is an experience of a life time and I can't wait to post pictures when I get back.

Sarah is doing great, and her fellow students are incredibly bright and great people. It has been a pleasure and a great experience to talk to them and share views and opinions. I had a few great conversations with our river boat tour guide as well. He has been great...he gives interesting information but doesn't bore us to death with a million details.

We arrived in Cairo night before last and we went to the Cairo museum yesterday to see King Tut's tomb and other cool stuff...but it is not air conditioned and we left after a couple hours..whew! We bring large bottles of water everywhere, but it is so hot we drink them down very quickly.

One of the things that we as Americans take for granted is using public bathrooms. Here in Egypt, there is an attendant in everyone of them with the toilet paper, if you don't tip them, you don't get in - and you don't get TP. Ugh. It has been a struggle for everyone to keep one pound notes for tipping.....LOL.

Today. we toured the pyramids and the sphinx, of course by camel...which was really fun!!! We were really lucky that there was a breeze so the 110 Degree heat didn't feel so bad. Most tourist businesses close up during the day and only open at night when it is cooler.

On the Nile River Boat tour, we started at Answam and ended up in Luxor. You can find these on a map of Egypt. We were also fortunate enough to get an armed escort to see Abu Simple (spelling may not be correct)... Abu Simple is right on the border with Sudan and the Egyptian govt. won't allow you to go there without a caravan and an armed guard on the tour bus. All temples have armed security personnell with AK 47s lingering around. (I have some pictures of the firearms they are using and will post those too) It was un-nerving at first, but you do get use to it. In Luxor at one of the temples, back about 10 years ago some extreme terriorist took Switzerland and Japanese tourists and slaughtered them...you can probably Google that for more details.... The Egyptian government spends a lot of resources keeping them all safe now.

Cab rides here are an experience of a lifetime. They weave in and out of traffic without regard to lane lines and cut each other off constantly. We saw a little car last night with 3 people in the front seat, four in the back, and 3 kids in the trunk driving down the road...Yikes! The term "This is Egypt" is used often to explain these types of things...LOL

I'll post some pictures as soon as I return.

Groovy. I just bought my ticket yesterday.

Which carrier did you use? I'm using NWA/Air France with a <4hr layover in Paris. Return trip has a <3hr layover in New York.

I had a friend who was working in Egypt for Shell Oil. He said he caught one of the Egyptian laborers having "relations" with a sheep. He said he threw a shovel at him and scared the sheep away.

Creates a whole new meaning for "camel jockey".
