Default Traffic law question.

No I did not get a ticket,
but while sitting in crappy traffic today i had a thought.

Say your on a road 55mph speed limit, go through a town etc and speed drops to 30mph, as you leave town the speed increases back to 55mph.

So when can you actually go the higher speed?
a) When you first see the sign?
b) When you pass the sign?
c) What sign I never slowed down?

i was told if the sign was in sight you could do that speed. I was also told you had to pass the sign first. So which is it?

I've always gone by when I pass the sign, but that usually doesn't keep me from accelerating before that point. I've wondered the same thing too Sandals.

Now, the real question is, have you ever seen a speed limit sign..........on weed?

Its when your vehicle completely passes the sign technically, but a cop will most likely not stop you if you accelerate slowly up to the sign. If you gun it, you will get the ticket. Same thing when slowing down, must be at or below the posted speed before the sign.

Speed limit signs should be located at the points of change from one speed limit to another or as near there to as possible.

what about in illinois?

and if some one paints closed a 3, turning it into an 8 you should go the 85 right? I mean it may have been a cop that painted it and i wouldnt want a ticket for impeding traffic.

In Illinois, you can do whatever you want. In fact, Chicago cops LOVE it when you flip them off and yell "fuck you!" at them really loud.

I do not believe that is entirely true. The stop sign for example. After you stop where is the go sign?

The local gov't that had the speed reduced for the "speed zone" is required to post the notice to resume the speed limit. This is gonna be at the town or speed zone border, because there are guidlines they have to follow to qualify for the reduced speed in a certain area and won't have authority beyond their border. So the actual change in speed would take place where the sign stands. Now, since the reduced speed is established for certain road /traffic conditions (prima facie speed), and you increase the speed early becauase the sign is visible, and the road conditions at that time allow for the increased speed, most officers aren't gonna enforce the "early speeding" in the zone, but that's their individual oppinion, or up to the magistrate as your tie breaker.
