Default Bull Gap Scramble Area?

I thought Bull Gap was one of the state's five scramble areas?

I was just up there this past weekend and they blocked off all the surrounding trails with fences. All that is left open is the main hill climb.

Funny thing is I'm sure it was done for "conservation" purposes but in blocking off the other trails and cutting 2 completely new backside easy access trails to the top they bulldozed down dozens of live trees causing more devastation and disruption than any of the trails they blocked.

So I guess this is no longer a "Scramble Area" and should be listed as a single hill climb?

Never found Bull Gap to be worth the drive. Now it's really useless.

Wouldn't drive there just for that either but it was a nice side trip when in Rose City area trail riding.

I watched a friend die on that hill coming down on a four wheeler and got hit by a truck heading up while I was standing at the bottom watching with his brother. They shut it down right after that. It was bad crazy back then. They need the side hills, but should make you go back down them.

It was fun. VERY WILD, but fun. It just got way too dangerous with so many people in that small of an area.

i know it use to get crazy in the past. My point or question was that these fences went up in the last couple weeks, I am concerned this may happen to other areas such as St Helen play area also?

I got ya. I don't know why they did that there, and I definitely agree with you about St Helen or other areas.

Did they just put the fences up so that people won't cut across the bottom of the hill or did they block the trails in other areas as well?

They would prefer that you play in a 1 acre sand box where the chances of something bad happening to you (but not the environment) are 1,000,000 times greater.

then they can park just outside of the fenced in 1 acre box and write tickets as well save them on gas and maintenance on their trucks.

And then close it for good because too many people are getting hurt.

they blocked all the trails off, the only open area is the main hill climb and two new trails they cut thru the woods leading back down. all others are blocked with trenches and fallen trees. i'm talking each run will have say half adozen trenches and trees across it making it look like a war zone.

Funny thing is it would have took another 30 years for ORVs to cause the distruction they did to keep the ORVs out.

That does not make much sense better to close the hill and leave the trails open.

Well sorry Mio, I don't plan on leaving Prudenville/Houghton Lake area or West Branch anytime soon then

are you sure the state put that fence up or some property owner adjacent to it? I was under the impression they couldn't just go in and close trails off without public disclosure of the plan first.

If you look at the ORV map that I just pulled from www.michigan.gov/dnr I grabbed this snapshot.

You think the trail that heads north from the hill was blocked as well? That is a pretty nice trail that leads from the parking area. Well established and signed like Lothos said unless it was by private property doesn't seem legal.

The hill would be much easier for them to justify shutting down.

no as a matter of fact they brought in tons of crushed stone to both the trail from the partking lot and the access road that comes in from the SE (Co. 489??) up to the gate then it is all sand again. the fences run from the gates out on the trails all the way thru including around and thru the parking lot off M-33.
