Default Edelbrock 1404 Rich

I have a new 4bbl 1404 model number, 500cfm carb and its running rich. The engine is a stock 302 except for a 4bbl performer manifold and the carb. The engine runs decent but the plugs are still black. I cant get the engine up to WOT, maxes out at about 4k rpm, but it idles like a top. The engine just revs up slow. Checked the fuel pressure and its right at 6psi. Anybody reccommend anything to make it run leaner?

Get a vaccum gauge and tune it until you get the best vaccum without stumbling while opening the throttle.

I would look around the web to see what combo metering rods people are using on your size engine, not to mention teh metering rod spec of fuel flow.

that was my first impression. I myself, dad, and Kodiak450r checked to make sure its in right and it is. Gonna try to lean the carb out so the plugs arent black..and set my idle with a vac gauge and go from there.

Once my tuning kit arrives i will get down to work. Carb is coming off. Removing the 4 main jets and gonna experiement Rich and Lean..as well as the Metering rods. Last thing ill do is check my float height.
