Default drive train options for 89 ranger

My son has a 1989 Ranger 2wd with an really nice body. We are considering converting to 4wd and I was wondering what my drive train opions are. I was thinking that the easiest thing to do would be to find another ranger with 4x4 and just swap that drive train into his. Am I on the right track or should I be thinking along different lines. The truck currently has a 2.9 with an automatic. I have a few axle combos from my cj-7 that I could also use.

Maybe Ford tech would be better?

Cj axles would be the wrong side to use a ford t case.

4x4 parts would be easier

your in the jeep tech section lol

but anyways, some will just simply take the whole TTB out from under another truck and bolt it into a 2wd truck. But you cannot do this on a 2wd ranger the engine crossmember is different. As far as ease a Jeep D30 would work being it matches the rear axles bolt pattern.
or you could do a early bronco 44 but the bolt pattern is different stock.

go to therangerstation.com and go to their forums and search for this, there is a lot of info about it, as far as an axle a jeep dana 30 would work, about the same width, same bolt pattern for rims, and the diff is on the correct side. If I can find my petersons issue, there is an article that they did this to a ranger.

I Would find a dana 35 ttb and use and 8.8 rear, 1354(i think) manual t-case. but yea trs is an awesome site for Rangers.

in order to put a ttb underneath a 2wd ranger he would have to change the enigne crossmember
