Default Got an issue with my 4.3 Mercruiser... Can you help?

So we were stranded in the boat today...

This has happened before and I have to tell you I was ready to sink the thing... Seriously it has happend the last 5 times we have had the boat out.

So we set out for a day of boating... Drive about 20 min. through the halfmoon chain, shut down do some fishing etc. Try and start it and nothing... I mean nothing. All the gagues power up the alarm sounds (to let you know it is working), but nothing. Then after an hour of powering back on the trolling motor the thing will start.

What is my issue? (other than I should have put the money into more jeep parts as opposed to a water toay).

Stern drive oil is fine, engine oil is clean and full. Could it be heat? The take up looks clean etc.

2006 4.3 Mercruiser

vapor lock?

Is it Fuel Injected? If so get it on the computer and see whats going on.

Its just a 4.3 liter chevy car motor, trouble shoot it the same way.

not fuel injected. It is a carb. Which was just adjusted by the shop end of the year last year.....

What causes vapor lock?

Vapor lock... Could be, but the engine does not even crank over or anything.

So you turn the key and get nothing out of the motor?

Sounds like your starter or solenoid could be getting some heat to them and screwing with something.....

just read a service memo on vapor locking... This is what I think I have.

I think if I idle a bit instead of shutting off I could fix my issue. It is probably due to heat. I have only owned outboards until this boat...
Any additional ways I can keep the heat down? I am thinking maybe adding another vent fan?

with an IO it is not a bad idea to run the blower for a bit idle down and even for a couple minutes after you have shut down....they may help.

I would also say ignition system. Starter/solenoid , battery, cables, wiring, etc. I would go thru the whole system and try to make it fail.

Yes.. nothing out of the motor when we turn the key.

I am with you.

Only I think it is vapor locking due to heat and then not restarting due to heat.

Runs about 160 while cruising. Then we cut it and it does not get to cool, it actually heats up a bit... Then we try and start and the heat sensors are not allowing the start.

It always starts after time which it is cooling i am sure.

If you vapor lock, wouldn't the engine still turnover?

190 Degrees is normal operating temperature for most engines out there. I don't know that heat would be your main problem. Sounds like it's actually running a tad bit cool.

Vapor lock usually causes intermittent running, runs and cuts out. I've done that to smaller 15 hp mercs before. It will always turn over.

Ignition modules like to heat up fail then start working again after they have been off for a few.

It sounds like a fairly simple solution considering the symptoms and it sounds like your probably a bit frustrated with it right now. Just think of it this way, I don't really know UPRocktoy but the problems with his boat motor probably takes the cake in comparison to your problem.

With any boat I have every captained they have all been I/O's and I have always run the blower with the engine hatch open for a good couple minutes. Never had a problem with starting. I have however lunched a couple of lower units due to bad mehcanics.

I would just replace the starter. Sounds like the brushes are getting bad and sticking. Does it even click like the solinoid is kicking in ??? If not then replace the solinoid.( shhh You can buy one at the auto part store will work for a boat just run the blower for about three minutes be for starting )
