i got a 97 tj with a hi pinion 44 front and a ford 9 inch in the rear. its had the gears setup up totally wrong by the previous owner in the 9 inch. i took it apart cause i had another 9 inch to swap some parts with. my parts nine inch is from a 79 bronco. its about 65 inch wms to wms. 31 spine with big bearings i think? i took the nine inch in my jeep apart it is 28 spline and the shafts are about 1 to 1.25 inches longer each. are the housing widths different from a 78 or 79 f150 to 79 bronco? is a 28 spline track loc common in an f150?
what are the common shaft measurements(length)of that time for f150's and broncos. i tried putting the shorter 31 spline shafts in so i could roll it out of my friends driveway, but they would not seat? are ther 2 sizes of outer axle shaft bearing? i thought they all used set 20 bearings?
there is 3 or 4 out bearing that ford used. they even had a tappered roller that used the axles grease to keep lubed.
your 31 is a just that. the shafts are bigger then the holes in the side of the 28 carrier.
as for axle width. your guess is as good as mine. they made bunchs of strange axle configurations. I broke a 31 once and searched junkyards for 3 weeks to find the correct one.
the one under the jeep is a 28 spline. the 28 spline shafts in the jeep about 1 to 1.5 inches wider than my 31 spline spares. my 31 is out of a 79 bronco. i was under the impression the jeeps axles were from a 78 or 79 f150. i really dont wanna have to change housings. the third and shafts and bearings i can deal with. this axle can be upgraded to 31 or 35 spline, if i get the correct parts right? i cant see having a 28 spline rear and 37's.
Joe, I have a set of 31 spline shafts that I took out when I went 35 spline. As far as specifics I can't give you much right now except they came out of an F150 and are identical lengths.
white rhino, i might be interested in the shafts. ill have to pull one of mine out and measure the lengths. i got a spare 31 spline 3rd. my shafts were about 1.5 inches too short(story of my life). i cant see sinking any money at all in a 28 spline axle. i cant believe the dingbat that built this jeep went through the trouble of putting a tj bracket kit on a 28 spline nine. seems like a waste of money to me. there is oval shaped wear marks in every gear on the new 4.56 gears. right in the middle of every tooth. he set them up way friggin wrong! makes alot of noise at normal throttle above 25 mph. more throttle its silent, less throttle its silent. when i pull it apart again ill measure the shafts and pm ya to see what yours measure. probably be at least a few weeks b4 i dig up the money to tear into it more. thx again.
