Default gas $$$$

How do you boaters do it? The cost of gas has got to be outrageous at the marina's these days. I mean, I have a boat at my folks place up north of Traverse, but these big fast boats I see on the water just blows my mind.

I can't even afford to drive a SUV to work anymore. I went to driving in nice quiet SUV comfort to driving a Geo or a Bike. And to afford to put gas in a gas guzzling boat would never happen for me but was actaully close to getting into the sport a couple years ago.

when we bought out boat we looked for something that used gas at a decent rate. our bayliner has a 117 gallon tank, and that equals 5 fishing trips on lake MI. a chevy 305 doesn't burn much fuel at 600 rpm.

you get a small boat like a 16ft with a 85hp on it you can tube and ski all weekend on it with only a tank of gas and it costs 55.00 to fill up

first off, you don't drive 5 hours to use it. Driving 30 miles down to the river is already a huge start as opposed to driving to TC to boat. That alone is one of the many reasons I still continplate selling my buggy for a go fast. It would be less diesel/gas $$ to run a bigblock all day on the lake than drive 6-7 hours to Canada getting 10 mpg with diesel.

It costs me less to use the boat then it does to go wheeling for the day. Unless I run real far....

I get better mileage towing the boat then I do the jeep, plus once I am on the water I don't really drive the boat that much, I spend half the day just relaxing in the water peeing on myself.

Why does everyone think if you own a boat that you have to get gas on the water?

Yeah, I trailer mine so I fill it up at the gas station. Also, Its a single outboard (all be it a 225HO) on a light little hull, so we can ski on one 25 gallon fill up for a whole weekend.

x2 with the fuel usage......We used to go to Silver lake on a holiday weekend and spend $1500.00 for a 6 day weekend. I wont spend that much for fuel for the whole year of boating and the best part is since I have the 27.5 footer...with the aft cabin, even staying at the marina intransient slip only costs me $25.00 a night...Try to find a hotel for that.....

As many have said, the difference between wheeling and boating fuel-wise is run time.

In an 8-hour day of boating, I'd run the boat maybe 3-4. Some of that would be a no-wake speeds using little gas. In wheeling, it'd be 6-7 hours of running the vehicle.

The exception is fishing, where you might troll a lot - again little fuel usage.

Plus as Bones pointed out, there's the 200+ mile trip to wheel, driving or towing the vehicle. Hell, my Polaris gets 18-20 mpg but I've gotta tow it 100 miles to the Mounds or 190 miles to Gladwin to use it.

And I seldom bought gas on the water. Higher prices combined with limited availability of premium and issues with quality kept me away.

What moved me out of boating wasn't fuel - it was usage. The last two years I owned the boat, I used it a total of about 12 hours. I spent two hours preparing it and then winterizing it for every hour I used it. A lot of this is driven by weather

I fill my boat in the spring and use can returns to keep gas in it the rest of the season, it's usually down around 1/4 tank at the end of the season when I pull it out......of course it is a pontoon and that 4 stroke FI engine does well on fuel. So far no issues with valves or maintenance :chiefwoohaw:

I filled up at start of season and only fish, so if I stay off Hardy or Lake Mi I'm good for the year

I have a 17' Sugar Sand "Tango" Jetboat with a 200 hp Murc V6 with a 30 gallon tank. I have to run at least 89 oct. in the boat, but I ALWAYS fill up with gas cans or before I drop it in the water. It seats 6, so usally I get a few buddys, we all chip in, and a tank of gas lasts all day plus more. Once I filled up, dropped in Grass lake by Bellere,MI, rode the cancal for an hour at no wake speed, spent all day on torch lake, tubing, skiing and all that and rode the river back and still only burn a little less than a half a tank and we were on it most of the day expect for when we were hanging out at the sand bar. I just wish the boat had a bit more power..
