I was watching Qualifying in my garage this afternoon. They were scheduled to televise 1 hour and then then another hour a little later . . . the first hour had just concluded when I went back to work on my truck. Then I heard the somber voice of Paul Page saying that Scott had been in a very bad wreck and that they didn't have any news as of yet . . .
That there usually means that there is no good news.
NHRA.com was hammered with people trying to get news, it was actually down for a little while.
They canceled the remaining qualifying and the Kalitta team (Hillary Will, Doug Kalitta, David Grubnic) will not be racing tomorrow. Sad. Godspeed Scott.

Man, that sucks, just watched the footage on espn. That track seemed really short for the shut down area.

Yeah, every track I have raced on had a sand pit, a net, and NO FREAKING WALL at the end.

I did not see anything, except a net right before a wall.

That is what I was thinking as well. The clip in the thread looks like there is a wall at the end of the shut down area. Granted I have only been to a few tracks, but I have never seen one that hasn't had a sand trap to stop the car.

You will be missed Scott.

wow, that sucks.

Damn near any shut down area would seem short at 300 MPH.

I used to live 5 mins from that track and went there all the time. the shutdown area is very short. few hundred feet or so. then it goes into the woods. can't believe the amount of fire fro that car when it crashed...RIP scott.

Apparently there is a sand trap at the end, but the car was about airborne from the retained speed, so didn't have a chance of stopping it. The design is to stop a car when a chute fails, assuming that the driver will be conscious. Speculation is that he was knocked unconscious from the initial explosion, and died as a result of the impact. Why a wall there? Leftover from an outdated design, when cars were barely ekeing out 200 mph.

I have a feeling that NHRA will be reevaluating their tracks, safety equipment, and the power that they are producing. There has to be a limit somewhere, just like restrictor plates in NASCAR. Too many accidents in too short of a time to ignore it. It's always been a dangerous sport, as are any motorsports really, but just like Earnhardt and the HANS device, etc, this may have a tic impact on the sport in general.
