Incorrect. I was in the local station a couple months ago when a guy was trying to buy 10 dollars in gas, all in quarters. The clerk refused. The guy made a big deal outta, wanted to talk to the manager. Manager came out.. Pretty much told him to get bent. Then the guy called the corporate office and they told him to get bent. The customer was escorted out by police when I refused to get it thru his thick skull that they would not accept that as form as payment. The guy then wrote a big article in the local paper and stood across the street protesting the gas station.

Cliff notes:
Guy tried it.
Corporate didn't give a shit.
Cops didn't give a shit.

Think about this. You are selling something... and axel. dude shows up with quarters. Are you gonna refuse quarters, and tell him to quit being a lazy ass and go get cash. Welcome to America. Freedom to refuse methods of payment as you damn well please.

Conspiracy. When the guys working get three or four people to pump then pay with quarters in an hour.

aside from random drive-offs, one of the reasons perhaps that virtually every pump these days (at least in the greater southeast Michigan area) is pre-pay, or pay at the pump...

they can't refuse your legal tender for all debts, public/private. that being said they can reserve the right to service you in the first place, and avoid said debt

if the pumpjockey turns the pump on, and then tries to refuse payment, then yes it's technically their problem.

interestingly enough, the problem may be on your side if you attempt to pay with too large of a bill.

while the courts/law uphold the concept of legal tender for payment of debts, I'm not so certain that the law requires a gas station to "make change" should you go the opposite direction and be an ass and pay with a $100.00 bill for a $0.79 pack of gum...
