FlatFender: So you will accept my change?
Station Clerk: Yes. I'm sorry.

How'd I do? Good?

They have to have a sign that says:

"we don't take large amounts of change"

Or

"We don't take bills large then 50$"

Otherwise they can't turn down your payment.

yeah, great idea promoting more frivolous lawsuits that will get tossed out...

it's still a free country, and a proprietor can still legally reserve the right to refuse to service/sell to a customer...

it falls under "legal tender" - and generally true.

that being said, it is also still legal for a business owner to reserve the right to refuse service to any customer. they also do not have to provide a reason... and in this case probably shouldn't.

In michigan though, no business HAS to let you do business with them. They can refuse to help you.

At least that is what my manager told me back in the day when I was at ACE full time. If I felt the need, I could refuse to sell anything to the customer.

Maybe that has changed in the last 6 years.

The guy is being a putz.
Fucking simpleton is too lazy or too stupid to count forty quarters.

Call the owner/manager.

+1 on next time he'sw working, get ten dollars in quarters and pump first.
If he doesn't accept it let him call the law. It's legal tender.

They can not refuse any legal tender regardless of amount even if you want to pay with large bills but tend to deposit most money into their safes. They will make you wait for enough to make change. If they refuse report them. Who carries cash???

intersting story i just foung... sorry its alot of words...

"Technically speaking, if you try to purchase something with legal tender (Fed. Reserve Note) and are denied the oportunity to pay with it, they have unlawfully denied you. At the least, the item you were attempting to purchase is now yours for free, at the most you have a lawsuit against them. Unfortunately, most police and judges do not have a proper understanding of the laws. I would not suggest trying it. I have tested the theory though. Most gas stations have a sign that says no 50’s or 100’s. The reason is they don’t want one purchase to leave them unable to make change later. Anyway, I filled up with $50 worth of fuel and tried to pay with a $50 bill. The clerk said he could not accept it, even though no change was needed. I asked id he was refusing my “legal tender”, to which he replied ya I guess so. So I left the place and drove off. Ten minutes later or so, a state trooper introduced himself to me. I told the above story, showed him $50 was all I had. He agreed that I was right, but asked if I wouldn’t mind returning with him and give the store the money. Well, part of me wanted to tell him to shove off, but seeing as my luck hadn’t run out, I didn’t press the issue any further and we returned to the gas station where the clerk’s drawer would now count out correctly at the end of the day. The officer explained to the clerk that I was in the right though."
