Default Stealing Catalytic Converters?

People are stealing catalytic converters when the vehicle owners are in the store! How crazy is that? It appears they cut them off with a sawzall. Those things get damn hot, they must be nuts. How much is a cat worth?

I think they get upwards of 80$ for them.

mostly they use a little battery powered circular saw, makes quick work of exhaust pipe!

There's a certain type of metal in them that's worth decent amount of money. Can't remember what kind of metal though.

Default Worth

Up to $300 each, due to the rare metals in them.

They mostly do it at night

They also are stealing license plates of a similar car that they own, pumping a tank of gas and driving off....

When the clerk gets the license plate....They have your license with a vehicle that looks like yours!

A little lite, they can go for up around $200-$350 each. Battery Sawzall is the choice for most of them.

catalytic converters are mainly desired for the platinum that is inside them. people sell them to a "Core Buyer" like myself. I usually give anywhere from $50-$175 depending on the converter and what the recycler is buying them from me for.

Sorry for straying off topic a little bit...I have an old one from a vehicle I parted out. Any idea where I would go to get rid of it?

I see this quite a bit, cars come into the shop with cats cut off, and when it is on a latter model car it can cost upwards of 2 grand to repair, that is one more reason insurance is so much.

No idea, but I know if I tried to transport one anywhere, somehow I would get blamed for a catalytic converter theft somewhere..

Some of you seem to have a bit more knowledge about this subject than most people do. I think I need to have you come in for a chat.:tonka:
