you are automatically dq'd for closed knuckle.... that thing might as well be a toyota axle

a dana 50 is metric, from memory it has a 44 sized pinion and a larger ring gear but not dana 60 sized.

if I were going to spend money on an axle that would be one of my last choices, it all depends on what you want out of it and what you plan to change to make it that way.

To do this simple conversion, all you do is remove the Dana 50 and install the Dana 60.

It's still a Dana 44 pinion, just the shaft is the same diameter as the Dana 60, but it still has 26 splines, not 29 like the Dana 60.

OK, on a serious note, just what exactly is the difference between a 50 and a 60? There seem to be some varying opinions on here. I have been told that it is a 60 housing with 44 internals, but who really knows.

that wasn't what broke...the pinion itself cracked in several places

The Dana 50 has a 9" ring gear, the Dana 60 has a 9.75" ring gear.

The Dana 50 has 30 spline shafts (shafts neck down to Dana 44 size), the Dana 60 has 1.5" 35-spline shafts.

The Dana 50 uses a modified Dana 44 carrier (Dana 50 carrier was discontinued).

The housing is a Dana 60 size housing (use same diff covers) but I don't believe you can put a Dana 60 diff/gear in it (never tried).

So, in essence, it is a Dana 60 housing but although the parts are Dana 44 size-ish, they are not Dana 44 parts.

call me stupid but isn't a 26-spline pinion the number of splines on the end of the yoke? if that holds true then your statement doesn't...26 or 29 splines would have made no difference ...the pinion gear itself cracked, not the shaft, not the splines

It's irrelevant where it broke, I was simply comparing sizes. Diameter usually increases with spline count (ie, the higher the spline count the larger the diameter).

My point was more along the lines that the pinion is still a Dana 44 pinion, not a Dana 60 pinion, although in this case they are the same diameter.
