Considering buying a 74 CJ5 w/350 Swap - What to look for?

I have never owned or considered owning a CJ5 especially one with a swapped engine. However, there is one for sale near me, and I am thinking about buying it. It has a glass tub to not rot issues there.

I do know to look at the frame (specifically around the rear hangers) for rot, etc., look at wiring, generally, to make sure it is not a rat's nest. What else should I be eyeballing closely other than the obvious like engine smoke?

Also, It has 2" of spring lift and 2 inches body, and the guy says the 4 wheel drive doesn't work because he hasn't been able to get the transfer case to mate up properly. Is 2" of suspension lift in a CJ5 enough to throw the angles off that far or do you suspect something more sinister?

Thanks in advance!

The frame shoudl be easy enough to inspect, its not boxed past the windshield or so. They don't rot the way later frames do, but they can. Check it for cracking around any of the springs, engine mounts, and steering mounts.

Try to determine what transmission and transfer case are in there. Stock would have been something that you don't normally bolt to a 350 (T14 or T15, doubt its a 4:1 first gear T18, but its a possibility). .

Might check the integrity of the windshield frame, they are a little hard to find, its different from the 76 later style.

Its pretty basic. manual drum brakes, manual steering, etc.

If the t-case is not mating up good something is wrong. I would be very cautious and look it over real good. I think there is something going on and he is not being honset with you. Just my .02

Neither of those items have anything to do with how the transfer case attaches to the transmission. Find out what model each unit is and what they originally came from.
