Not enough info.

Personally, I've had better pay at non-union shops as I can negotiate my pay based on my work.

However, the previous shop I worked for closed a location to get rid of the union, then closed the location I worked for and cut everyone's pay that went to the other location that was still operating.
I left before the closing, as soon as it became clear what was happening.

After what happened at AAM, it seems that the UAW is getting neutered anyway

My Uncle makes over $70K a year to put parts in a box on an assembly line for Chrysler and he's UAW. What a ridiculous amount of labor cost to do what a chimpanzee can do. Get rid of the union.

I had a union grievance filed against me today. I put a green sticker on the windshield of a car to verify a certain part was certified. Apparently, thats a union workers job that I am taking away from them. So I got a grievance, and that guy got 4 hours of extra pay because of it.

I then waited outside in 43 degree weather for 45 minutes for the correct union person to come out and stick the sticker on.

It sounds like they are worth keeping to me.

People never seem to believe me when I recount stories like this... it sounds so fucking outrageous, they're right to question it... sad thing is, it's true.

Hey Jeff, how is it going??

GET RID OF THE UNION

My story with the union is while i was doing IT work at a union building. I simply had to replace 5 computers. I drove up to their loading docks with my 5 computers and was told they would unload them shortly.

3 hours later the computers show up on a cart in the office suite i need to place them in. I tell the union workers where the computers need to go, they drop off each computer on the ground right by the desk. The workers who unloaded the computers left.

I picked up the first computer to place it on the desk (I was moving it all of 3' from the floor to the desk) All of the sudden a gang of UAW members start giving me the third degree of how i was stealing their jobs and i have no right and i was not qualified to move the computers. They said i was not authorized to move the computers. So I stopped moving computers and they said they would move them after their break. I was new to this job and did not want any trouble so i sat there an waited another couple of hours until they showed back up. They had about 7 guys there to move the 5 computers to the desks. After waiting a couple hours, they were done in less than a minute.

It was pretty much the same story when it came time to load the old ones into my car.

A job that was supposed to take 2 hours max turned into an 8 hour day. I was getting paid by the hour back then, the Union effectively quadrupled the labor rate to complete the job.

Subsequent times, after i had been there a while, i just moved the computers myself. No way i was going to put up with that every time.

The union protects the weak and lazy while holding back the productive people.

The union was good when there were coal miners getting paid min. wage to risk their lives and the union stepped in to make it more fair. Since then it's gotten out of control. The die shop I used to work for did a lot of work for Chrysler so a lof of plant managers would come in to look at dies. While talking to one of these plant managers, he told me that fork truck drivers a Chrysler made more than him....he was salary at $98,000. The fork truck drivers also didn't ever have to get off of the fork truck for any reason. If they picked something up and a pallet broke and they couldn't pick it up again they would call someone else to walk over and help them. It happens with everything. I like animals, so let's start a group an call it PETA. We will make sure people don't torture their pets....skip ahead 20 years and they'll sue you for stepping on a cockroach. People need to take a step back and look at the overall situation an use some G.D. common sense.

I am in the steel business and we have Ironworkers on our payroll. Some of them earn every cent of what they make and then there are the guys that make $.60 less an hour (journeyman not Foreman) and you can not get them to do a thing. The Union helps in some areas, but it is all coming out that most are overpaid and unskilled. Any other employer and they would be making minimum wage. This is all coming out since the big three and it's supplier are cutting back and these unskilled overpaid workers are going from $60K+ a year with full benefits to $10 an hour and no benefits. Overall this is going to hurt America.

American Axle = Future of the UAW.

$28/hour to $18.50/hour and reduced health care coverage/increased cost.

However, those $18.50 jobs are in MI and not Mexico.

Bravo to the folks at American Axle who elected to have a job rather than a better-paying former job. A $9.50/hour pay cut sucks in times of $4/gallon gas and the related price increases it'll drive, but our economy cannot (and increasingly WILL NOT) support $70K+/year unskilled labor.

If an 18 year-old kid can learn your job in a few days, expect to be paid like an unskilled 18 year-old kid (i.e. $7-$8/hour). If your standard of living depends more on where you work than what you do, build some skills.

i goto school with 2 displaced middle aged ex delphi employee's. they were making 30/hr plus when they were laid off. if these 2 dumb chimps are the average for uaw employee's its no wonder they lost their jobs to a trained monkey overseas.
