Default what type of posi is this?

clutch or gear driven? It's in a Ford 9". I know the gears are aftermarket, but I can't say for sure if the posi is or not. I bought the complete third member a couple years ago as you see it. It looks nothing like the gigantic clutch posi housing in an Explorer 8.8

almost looks open to me. Take it apart and look at it. That looks like a 2 piece carrier.

I don't think it's open. I can put an axle shaft in each side and they turn together. One guy said that the stock Ford Posi units look like that and the clutches are tucked into the case.

factory ford limited slip. the way to tell open from limited slip is the limited slip has the carrier spot faced where the ring gear bolts are (clutches actually sit in the small "hump" within the ring gear bolt head diameter); open is machined all the way around the carrier. lots of times the limited slip carriers will split around the bolt heads because the metal is so thin.

X2

Be sure to look close for cracks on the case near the ring gear seat.

The one on the left is a open and the other is a trac-lok. You can tell by the ring gear bolt surface. The trac-lok has recessed holes.
