got a funny story about the last ferry. my wife, 1 year-old daughter, and i were racing for the last boat out of st.ignace. we called the hotel. the concierge said if you don't make the boat, we can get you a flight out of pellston...it was rainy, foggy, and COLD. needless to say the pedal went to the floor! i think one of the dock workers even parked our truck. we literally jumped the dock to get on!

Something a little different but the 1959 movie “Anatomy of a Murder” is based on a murder that occurred in Big Bay in 1952. The movie was shot on location in the UP and many of the buildings and landmarks are still around. Many people think it is still a great courtroom movie and was very edgy in its day. If you enjoyed the movie it is kind of fun to visit the places where the movie was made.

One of the easiest places to visit is the “Mt Shasta” restaurant in Michigamme on 28. Still looks the same, nice place to eat and there is some movie memorabilia there. Wikipedia info on the movie here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anatomy_of_a_Murder

Okundekun Falls is one of the best waterfalls in the U.P. and is halfway between Bruce Crossing and Ontonogan. There is a small parking lot and a one mile hike on an easy trail to get there.
Here I am atop the falls...and the water was very low then.

You can go behind the falls too.

May as well see Lake in the Clouds from the overlook. That and the 3 waterfalls you can park by at the other end of the Porkies is about all you can see by car...without hiking several miles.

If you go to Copper Harbor you have to hit the Jam Pot and get a fresh pastry from the monks. Brockway Mountain Drive is a must drive. It is okay, scenic wise...but there is much better. Like the view from a Nature Conservancy trail system called Bare Bluff Nature Sanctuary...go to Bette Grise and take Smith Fisheries road to the parking spot and trailhead...after that the dirt road gets rougher (if you make it to the end of the road there is a 3/4 mile hike to Montreal Falls which is pretty awesome). Tough mile long hike to the top of the bluffs. But the view! Yes, that is the entire tip of the Keweenaw Peninsula...you can't see anything like that from B.M.D.

Hike Estevant Pines near Copper Harbor.

On your way out of the Keweenaw stop by Peterson's Fish Market at the top of the hill above Hancock...across the street from the Quincy mine. Awesome smoked fish.

West of Sault Ste Marie there is an old abandoned air force base called RACO. Take you car on the runways and see if you can hit 100 or so.

If you want to do some 4-wheeling take a road just East of Muskallonge Lake called Coast Guard Line Road 10 miles to the end. It gets really sandy but there is a beach there that is awesome.

I could go on and on...

No, my brother doesn't smoke anything. But I brought him back from that 14 day U.P. trip with a sunburnt forehead and arms, poison ivy all over, blisters from his poor selection of boots, more blisters from the sandals he tried to wear after the boots, dirty feet from going barefoot after that, and a heck of a smile from all the amazing sights we'd seen together. I think he now knows to be prepared when I tell him we are going camping, hiking, and wheeling.

My wife and I are hiking the Porkies in August. We are stopping in Lanse at the Hilltop Bakery for cinnamon rolls as big as your head and as good as any you'll ever have (and they're like $4 a piece).

Well if I weren’t heading down to the parents for the summer I would take you out into the bush and show you some of the really good stuff that many don’t see.

The best view in my opinion is atop the old radar building on Mount Horace Greeley. But you aren’t suppose to be there anyway.

Thats just the NE side.
The 2 track to crisp point is some decent wheeling. Took it a few years ago in the explorer. I am a lighthouse buff and a member of the Crisp Point Association. Go to White Fish Point and you can get the directions to CP there.

The mystery spot, or the wax museum out side of Ignace is a cool place to go.

The falls are also cool.

When going to the Island stay on the main land and just ferry over. You'll save a lot of coin. Hell they charge just to fit on the porch at the grand hotel.

Have fun, but don't go in the second half of Nov. Deer season is the a way of life up there and if you're not a local you will think people are loonies.
