I'm not a hater, but the UAW and the "UAW entitlement mentality" that permeates this area has to be cured or the local economy will never turn around.

To paraphrase something that's been around since I was a kid: I'll bet there's a lot of $15-$18/hour unskilled labor jobs, but few $36/hour ones...

I want my kids to live around here and have decent jobs - but until we fix our problem (above) that looks like a longshot.

And it affects everyone. With the economy in the crapper, there's less money in play, be it for doctors, stockbrokers, store clerks, 4x4 shops, restaurants, or car repair places.

You know, this is the most educated union thread I have ever read anywhere.

Hats off to everyone for keeping emotions in check.

My grandfather was a union organizer in the 30's, he was involved in the battle on the bridge. The union was created so that workers did not have to suck a dikc to keep their job. The unions also had a big part in making the workplace safer by giving workers someone to go to when conditions were unacceptable.

But by the 60's, the unions had become more powerful than the companies and acted more in their interest than the workers. The higher the wages, the more the union got from each paycheck. It saddened my grandfather to see what the union he worked so hard to help bring had become.

I've said many times that eventually worldwide wages for unskilled production labor would settle out at around the equivalent of $10/hr. AAM is the beginning of that trend.

I had a bad experience with the Teamster's union. Atleast, that's who I think it was.

I was a minor at the time, and they were taking union dues out of me. The one time I went to the union rep, he told me he couldn't do anything for me because I was a minor.

And when I asked why I was paying union dues, he said I had to.

Wtf. I couldn't just leave the union there, it was a closed-shop setup. That's just messed up.

Had to be Teamsters, they excel at extortion.
Teamsters shop I worked for paid 4.85/hr to start for maimtenance (stamping presses, not janitorial) after 8 years I broke $10/hr and left for a UAW shop (Aetna industries) that paid $11.85/hr to start....this was in the 80's - early 90's

I think the union is still needed, But it needs to be fixed. They need to stop fighting for the people a lot of the people they fight for. Like people have said back in the day they help out a lot of people. Now they fight for the drunk to keep his job. I think if they could get them back to fighting for the hard working person and let the people who come to work drunk, high, or try and kill some one go. They would be a lot better. I vote yes, but I would like to see the people running now get fired, and bring in some one that will do the right thing with it.

Personally I think we will be better off without the UAW. Their inefficient ways will only create more problems and profit loss for the company.

Awesome. Glad the UAW is out, at least for where you're at.

Unions can make sense if they help out workers and the company at the same time. The UAW only does one and it's not the companies that are being helped.
