Default New to offroading with a couple questions...

...been reading/lurking for awhile. First post.

I bought an Wrangler Unlimited X a few weeks back and I'm finally going to be able to get it dirty. I'm going to Mackinac Island this weekend for a conference and planning on stopping at the St. Helen scramble area for both me and my Jeep's virgin run on the way home on Sunday.

Any been there? Will my stocker do alright or will I be getting stuck in the mud and sand? Do I need to air down like at the dunes or should I be alright?

Thanks. Any tips or info about the scramble area would be greatly appreciated.

theres a bunch of illegal trails around white lake, and waterford that you can go and mess around on and learn on and hope that the cops or DNR don't hear or see you and you don't make a bad name for the rest of us by wheeling in illegal places

Welcome.

St. Helen is a pretty fun area, and you'll be just fine stock, no worries. Maybe air down, but it doesn't need to be super low. Just try and find someone to wheel with, and be sure you have proper front and rear tow points. It'd suck to get stuck by yourself or without anything to pull you out by.

And definitely don't go to the illegal trails WLjeeper suggested, odds are they're illegal/private property.

Why would you even mention the ILLEGAL trails that he can run on? How about suggesting he go to the mounds or somewhere LEGAL to play around and get used to his vehicle. No bullshit,no tickets,no fines. And one less dumb ass wheeling where he is not supposed to be and making ALL of us look bad.

Thanks. I've got two hooks in front and one in back. I also bought a recovery strap.

It'll just be me and the wife so I'll be taking it pretty easy and avoid the mud holes unless there's a few other vehicles around as an insurance policy.

Sounds good, you should have a good time. Odds are, you won't get stuck, just be smart.

Does your recovery strap have hooks, or loops at the ends?

Planning on going to the mounds in a couple weeks.

It's not worth dealing with the illegal trails to me. The reason I've had the Jeep since February and have got it dirty is because they're aren't many legal places to ride in SE Mich, but wheeling illegally will only prevent new legal areas down here. I've heard rumors of a couple of the gravel pits in Oxford and Holly being turned into an ORV park, but the communities don't want it because of the reputation.

Loops. I was told hooks turn into ammunition when the strap breaks.

Thanks for tip, but I can barely afford the Jeep and insurance now! Can't imagine after I get few tickets.

Welcome! Sounds like you've done your research. St. Helens is a blast, just be careful if you go out alone.

There isn't anything too tough there. Just use common sense. There is a decent ORV Route in the area that has some hills and such too.

I will be up in the West Branch/St. Helen's area doing a trail clean-up Sunday with the SoFo guys.
