Default 55 mph

Would you die if the Gov changed the speed limit back to 55mph to help lower the dependence on oil due to the increased MPGs?

I drive the diesel now at 65mph so I don't think I would mind to much. . . . on the other hand cruise at 80/85 on the motorcycle so . . .

I'm starting to think it's a win win because of the increased MPGs and the increased revenu for the states enfocing thoses that can't drive 55.

Although I don't like rules and regulations like the majority . . . . I might not mind this one because it will decrease our dependence on Middle east oil.

This was the discussion on the talk radio station on the way in this morning and was wonding what the boards thoughs were.

I would not like it, though I drive pretty slow already. My plan is to buy an econo beater.

Depends what car I am driving.

The Malibu zips along a bit over the speed limit already. The wagon I have found I tend to drive rather slow and sometimes under the speed limit.

I'd be ok with it. I drive 65 usually. I don't mind the Goverment helping me get better MPG. It woudl reak havoc on people's Schedules though. It seems like nobody knows how to leave early and just enjoy the ride anymore. It's all about getting there as fast a Possible. IMO

We only import 2,451,000 barrels a day from the Middle East out of a total of 9,271,000 total daily. The middle east makes up approximately 26% of our total oil imports.

I wish people would get their facts straight on where we get our resources from and stop listening mindlessly to what you hear/see/read in the media.

Right, so your saying that by driving slower we could cut the middle east out completely . . . I'm all for it now. Thanks for getting my facts straight for me

Driving 55 is dangerous. It's very tiring and conducive to paying less attention to the road. It feels like standing in place. I would die if I had to drive 55 all the time. I would fall asleep and crash. But then I wouldn't be driving, so I would reduce the dependence on oil.

Meh... I wouldn't mind. I actually enjoy driving slower. When we head North for vacations, I tend to take the freeway as little as possible to get the most enjoyment out of my 55-60mph drive... :)

I'd be in jail for reckless driving, doing probably 30 mph over.

If they want to increase fuel mileage....spend the money to get intelligent traffic systems so people don't sit idling at a stop light for 30 seconds to a full minute when there's absolutely zero traffic going the other way.

It would be an immediate way to reduce fuel usage. All other plans would take years to make a difference, at least this would help today.

Personally, I would not mind so much. We have done it before. Don't forget the speed limit was 55 mph for the longest time.
I would drive 55 on the highway right now except for the fact that I feel it to be dangerous driving that slow when the average speed is 70+ mph.

It didn't work the last time, so why would it now?

I'd love it, anything over 55 induces vibes in my XJ.

I wouldn't mind at all. I cruise 55-60 in bronco most of the time except when I fall in the catigory stated above and forget how to leave early. I used to drive a semi that was governed at 55 because my co driver was getting tickets all the time for driving 90-95. Its no that much slower unless your doing long long hauls.

I say leave it the way it is. I am allowed to drive 55 on I-75 to save fuel; no reason to penalize others. Currently, I go 60 mph but will drop to 55 when fuel oil goes above $5 / gallon.
Either you understand there are big fuel economy gains to be had going slower and ratchet your speed down, or you don't give a hoot.

Besides, I like being the slowest on the road; I stay as far right as I can and never have to worry about passing or getting stuck behind someone.
