figure what? I've always been told our roads (highways) were designed to be able to driven at 85 in most any car and not have a problem with the curves etc. I am sure there are some areas, but in general.
That was back in early 50's when they thought we would be running on water propulsion or maybe even flying by then :tonka:

I'm very shocked at how many people in this site want to be forced to slow down to save gas.

I wouldn't mind that much. I already drive to the capabilities of my vehicles, which is usually 55-60 tops. Even my bone stock XJ feels weird to me at 70.

Now if this was 8 years ago, when I was still driving my 81 Malibu full drag car on the street as a DD, I'd be in trouble!

Speed limit was 55 before, it can be 55 again. You can still drive however fast you want.

Yes, it could be lowered.

But if we keep it at 70 I can choose to drive 70 without worrying about getting a ticket, or I can choose to drive 55 and save gas.

If the limit is changed to 55 and I choose to drive 70 to save time I risk getting a ticket.

Is that concept really that difficult to understand? I can't believe I have to try to explain it.

I can't believe you think you know how "worked up" I am by reading what I typed.

But then again I do get worked up when the government wants to tell me what to do, and even more so when people sign up for it willingly.

I personally like driving 70 on the highway. If we mandate 55 it is going to cost truckers money if they get paid by the mile. True it's only 5 mph slower than now for big trucks but that time adds up. I think the real solution is for Americans to stop driving giant SUVs and pickups and start driving smart with fuel efficient vehicles. When the demand for more fuel efficient vehicles increases, the manufacturers will provide.

I like to drive my truck at about 75 . . . below that and the engine is lugging in 5th, just above 55 and it's running higher than economical in 4th . . .

I often find myself at about 3000rpm in high gear . . . oops, the limit is not 95 lol. Of course, When I want to get somewhere, it does not matter how much it cost me, it's that I get there and enjoy the trip. I won't enjoy anything when the government is telling me that I can't do now what I was able to only a few days ago . . . and that goes for everything, not just driving.

what about we teach people to actually use the lanes correctly. Now that some SUV owners have slowed up and don't do 80-85, they are going 65-75'ish, they need to learn to move the frick over to the right....

It's not the government's job to tell me what to do. It's our job to tell the government what to .
The US government is of the people, by the people, and for the people. It know it's been changing for the worse, but we need to not forget that.

Let those that want to drive 70 drive 70. If you want to drive 55, just stay in the right lane.

I tried this over the weekend heading up to GR and back. I went about 65-67 with the cruise, and it actually wasn't bad.

I always used to drive my TJ at about 60 but when I got my car that bumped up to at least 80 everywhere. I think I could handle a 55mph speed limit as long as they weren't pulling people over for going 65.

That said, I still think a speed limit should be lowered only when people are getting hurt, not to reduce our dependence on foreign oil.

I agree 100%!!!!

If you want to save money on gas drive slower, it's that simple!

Sorry, but that has to be one of the stupidest statements I've read in a long time. Why the hell have a 55mph speed limit if your going to allow people to drive 65mph?
