Any really. They're all great vehicles, The only difference between the newer body style XJs is the ignition. 2000 and 2001 don't use a normal distributer cap. Which I kinda like.

97-up are good, although for straight mudding I'd look for options. 231, Chrysler 8.25, etc.

That might help a little.

anything up to 99. 00-01 don't have the high pinion dana 30 and that axle is a whole lot stronger than the regular d30.

Very true, forgot about the crappy low pinion 30.

I just had to buy a new one this weekend for my 2002 TJ...it only was $125 brand new at autozone. I didn't think that price was that bad.

not to bad considering an aftermarker coil for the distributor model is about $60 (accel) and the accel wires are about $60 as well, not to different in price.

BTW any xj that has little to no rust is a good one, these things are prone for cancer, pull the carpet back and take a look or look underneath mainly where the catlytic converter and muffler meet, the floor right above them tend to rot out bad and also the foward rear spring mounts, no rust in these areas and it is probably almost worth buying.

98-99 with the 8.25 rear are the only ones I'd go after without being willing to swap out the LP D30 in the 00-01 or deal with the distributorless ignition system. I own a 98 myself.

Heated seats were available in the last couple years. If I had to do it over, I would probably spend the extra time looking for a 2-dr 5-speed.

If you're just going to trail rig it out, buy something 96-down with a HO motor, a non-fully pressurized cooling system, and a non-disco HP D30.

XJ parts are generally easy to find, so its not the end of the world if you find one you like that has the wrong axles in it.

I got my OEM coil pack from the stealership for under $100. And I have over 400K between my 2 XJ's. My currant is a 2000 and my previous was a 2001. Wouldnt buy anything else. Well maybe a porche, Lambo, Ferrarri, Rover, yea I guess I wouldnt buy anything else under $10k. I would obviously look for the newer as possible. 2001 or 2000 if you can swing it. Plus they look way cooler!
