Default Econo Cars, what is your 30mpg commuter?

The time has come, gas has pushed me to the brink of wanting a commuter car that gets 30+ miles per gallon.

According to my math, I am paying approximately $600 per month just to drive to work.

So if I were to get a 30+ mpg car to drive to and fro work I could spend $300 or less if it gets better then 30 mpg.

I'd prefer the car pay itself off in the first year. So we are talking a budget of approximately $3600.

What's your beater?

Just get a stripped aveo and be happy with higher MPG and it will pay itself off in 3 years.

Right now I am driving a 75 Mercedes 240d. Gets about 30. Slow....well really slow. Has no problem maintaining 80 mph though.

Getting ready to sell that and start working on getting my RX7 running. Going to try to DD that for awhile.

92 fifth avenue. I got it for free......well I had to fix the pos to get it to roll, but it gets 23mpg. I am certain if I keep my foot out of it I could get 25, but I have to do 120mph to get to work on time.

hi read the thread title.

duece I'm not impressed with the aveo, a car that small should get much better mileage. I've been tempted to buy one before though...

All I know is my dad drove his from Rose City to Bay City for a year and was getting pretty impressive numbers out of an $8k car. Put small truck tires on the front and it goes EVERYWHERE. No stucks in the snow and he racked up plenty of miles on it making tracks.

If thats true then maybe you should look at the one Shredder had uproktoy

Maybe that was less mileage b/c it was a 91 or 92 I think with the 3.1

I'm afraid you turned down an offer to ride in my commuter a while back when you needed that ride to southfield, cause you didn't want to be seen in a miata :tonka:

It doesn't quite get 30 mpg, and it does require premium unleaded, but it is infinitely more fun to drive than the various beater/econo boxes I have owned in the past. They included:

Honda CRX's ('85-'91)
Honda Civic Si's ('88-91)
Mazda Protoge's (older school)

if style/fun isn't in the equation at all, I should think any of the above, or an older geo prism/toyota corrolla clone would work.

did you look at that MK3 GTi over in the classifieds?

I used to own an early 90's Saturn that consistantly got over 30 MPG and was easy to maintain and was cheap to purchase. If i was forced to get another DD just for gas mileage i would look at Saturns. You could buy and early 2000 within your budget

I know several people with Saturns. They are all getting over 30 MPG. One has leather interior and that weird suicide door, seems like a nice car.

I want a little wagon, maybe like a Pontiac Vibe? Or something like that. I haven't started looking into them yet though.

suzuki sv650.

i have been using google maps to chart out shorter ways to work. I started with a drive of 14.7 miles and am down to 8.6. plus the mileage in my mustang has gone from 20 to 23.5 by switching routes.

I've done the math and I can't justify yet. $51 a week in gas or $204 a month in the jeep. My xs2 650 gets 55mpg but needs tires and insurance. Insurance is $297 and not sure on tires as I haven't priced them. Ideally that would be my best first choice as I can't get a beater and insure it for less than $200 a month right now let alone have a place to park it.

O yeah, and the TURBO made it super fun to drive and with about $1000 more in injectors, map sensor and turbo you could have VERY VERY fun car to drive while still getting 35mpg
