Default In Need Of Some Tech Help W/ 460 Bbf

I Got An Early 70's 460 Bbf And Im Having Trouble With It. The Problem Is It Runs Really Rough (like A Tractor) . Like Its Running Too Lean. Also It Did Run Good When I First Put The Engine In The Truck For A While (until A Buddy Borrowed It)!!! So This Is What I Have Done To It Since, Leak Down Test (both Wet And Not) W/ Good Psi, New Holley Carb(checked That For Adjustment), Spark Plugs Wires ,cap And Rotor, Coil, Brain (truck), Fuel Pump, Fuel Filter, Drained And Refilled Gas, Adjusted Dist. By Sound And By Timing Light , Checked Vac Psi, Adjusted Carb And Dist. Recheck, Recheck..... Now I Think Its The Heads???????? I Need Some Help With This ... I Am About To Just Go And Get This 429 Bbf , But Trying To Fix The 460 Thanks

Wow you pretty much hit on everything. If he over wound it I'd pull the valve covers and check for a broken valve spring next. Or possible a tuliped valve sinking in the seat.

Have you pulled the dizzy and checked the drive gear? If the cam wasn't put in correctly it may have took out the drive or wiped a lob on the cam. Pull the covers and check all the rockers. $1000 is a little pricey for a stock/fresh 429, Is it built?

Pull the distributer and check the gear on the bottom. If its broke or missing teeth then you might have some problems. I know my cam has to have a bronze cam gear on it and i have to replace them after a while. It does sound valve related if yoiu have done all the things you say you have. I got a 500 hp 460 ill sell ya but it aint going to be cheap.

Two possibilities for you. I had a 76 460 that would suck the bottom of the intake gaskets in and create an internal vaccuum leak. It would pass any external leak test I did on it. It had the tin valley pan type gasket and after it did that twice over a few years I solved it by using an intake gasket set for a 70 motor (they didn't have the tin pan).

I'm not sure what year ford started using hardened exhaust seats, but my 71 460 had two valves beat themself into the head when leaded gas was no longer available. That caused a john deere tractor type miss but did not show up on the compression test.

Good luck

Had a 460 motor do exactly the same thing...with the intake gaskets.......
Except I had more than 2 valves get beat up..

.I actually started calling that truck " Johny "...:tonka:

hope this helps.....Stay away from $1,000 motors...when you can rebuild yours, custom to your needs , for Less !!!

good luck.
