COURT SETS ATHEISTS' HOLIDAY

In Florida , an atheist became incensed over the preparation of Easter and Passover holidays. He decided to contact his lawyer about the discrimination inflicted on atheists by the constant celebrations afforded to Christians and Jews with all their holidays while atheists had no holiday to celebrate.

The case was brought before a judge. After listening to the long passionate presentation by the lawyer, the Judge banged his gavel and declared, 'Case dismissed!'

The lawyer immediately stood and objected to the ruling and said, 'Your honor, how can you possibly dismiss this case? The Christians have Christmas, Easter and many other observances. Jews have Passover, Yom Kippur and Hanukkah...yet my client and all other atheists have no such holiday!'

The judge leaned forward in his chair and simply said, 'Obviously your client is too confused to even know about, much less celebrate his own atheists' holiday!' The lawyer pompously said, 'Your Honor, we are unaware of any such holiday for atheists. Just when might that holiday be, your Honor?'

The judge said, 'Well it comes every year on exactly the same date---April 1st! Since our calendar sets April 1st as 'April Fool's Day,' consider that Psalm 14:1 states, 'The fool says in his heart, there is no God.' Thus, in my opinion, if your client says there is no God, then by Scripture, he is a fool, and April 1st is his holiday! Now have a good day and get out of my courtroom!!

p.s. i'm an agnostic. I don't deny the possible existence of a god, just deny the existence of your God.

That was funny. But seriously. What would athiests claim to celebrate? I mean, We have non-religous holidays. So you might consider those Athiest holidays. They don't really have anything to celebrate. IMO.

But "we" (meaning atheists, agnostics, humanists [that's me], etc.) never SAID we needed a holiday........?

I don't know of any that have.

i think atheists, agnostics, secular humanists, etc. would have more power if we could just pick one name and stick with it. We are much too divided over dumb labels.

There is a difference though Mike. In the case of being Protestant, Catholic, Christian, Lutheran, etc. they disagree on matters concerning their respective theology, but they all believe in a god, and the same god, and that the god created the earth and the people with a purpose in mind, and that we are here to fulfill that purpose, and that when we die we will be judged (seems sort of silly to "judge" us after we lived the life and made the decisions that this god knew we would in the first place, but whatever....), and that "morality" or lack of it is predicated on following their gods direction.

In the case of agnostics they are defined as those that believe that the existence/nonexistence of a god is unknowable, therefore they're not commited to believing either way; atheists believe that there is no god.

Humanists don't accept any supernatural beliefs (gods, angels, devils, ghosts, psychic "phenomena", reincarnation, afterlife, etc.) and believe that morality is not predicated on religion. Not mentioned before are iconooclasts, who attack religious belief, symbology and institutions. They are, of course divided in to seperate schools of thought based on motive.

As far as the comment about lacking direction, I believe that I am as directed as KaiserJeep, just by a different source..... Me.

What if I didn't believe in a god, but liked the "morality" of the bible? What if I followed that to the letter without accepting the supernatural side of it? Would I burn in hell for eternity? Would I be judged poorly because I had a chance to accept and chose not to? Gee... Sounds like tyranny to me, and if that's the case then they might as well shoot me now, because I'll never surrender to tyrrany. Screw that.
