Default double amputee tries to compete in olympics

http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/wire?...oly&id=3323463

should he be able to compete?

double amputee's metabolic cost is 2x that of an able-bodied individual

although his limbs may look really cool etc. they only return 80% of stored energy while the able body essentially returns 100% of energy put into the 'system', with exception of joint compression and some bone flexing.

he runs using 1/2 of the muscles of the normal sprinter. his running style uses 1/2 of his quads and mainly his butt muscles (gluteus max) where an able bodied individual has all of the lower limb muscles and all of the hip/thigh muscles...

discuss
i say let him run, see what happens

and the guy who eqated his legs to letting people run w/ jet pacs is a moron

I feel those truely concerned about an unfair advantage should have both legs amputated to level the playing field. Heck, lower total muscle use use and have both arms amputated too. This person could be a super competetor. They could also compete in swimming. I'll call this person Bob.

I agree. Let him run. If the "able-bodied" people are so worried about it, then they will just have to train that much harder to make sure that they can keep up with his "cheetah legs." "Bob" had to train his whole life to get used to his legs just like any other normal person did.

I'd say let him run as long as he doesn't run for USA. Not that I really care that much about the olympics, but it's nice to see America win and this guy will prolly not win.

Seriously, this guy may have an unfair advantage. After thinking about this topic for a few minutes I've decided I don't care if stumpy competes or not.

At some point you have to draw the line, it may not be with this guy, but at some point, some day, some person will have a mechanical appendage replacing a natural appendage and it WILL function better then the original natural appendage.

i hear people in biathalon are starting to wear contact lenses to help correct poor vision that they were born with. i wonder when the olympic committee will start to investigate the use of technology to correct developmental defects. tis a very slippery slope

have heard that people are also wearing full body suits in swimming to decrease drag and allow them to swim faster.

admit it coktoy, you just want all the dude's to be naked again like in the roman days :stan3:

All of this science is good stuff, but is it fair to compare the records of yesteryear witht he records of today?

Swimmers going faster because of better suit material.
Runners running faster because of better shoes.

We won't get into the nutrition and drugs..err supplements argument, let's just talk about the advances in "equipment"

Naked athletes

No, my line in the sand is the natural human body. No fake feet, no bionic legs/arms/etc/

So I guess I would say that the double amputee should not be allowed due to the possibility that his legs could be made to perform better then a natural pair of human legs.

I don't really think he should compete. Sucks he's a double amputee, but his prosthetics could very well help him. I don't care if he only uses half his muscles, because those prosthetic legs are engineered to compensate for that. I bet they do give him an unfair advantage.
