im not really sure what happened there, but I just wanted to post in this thread because I like threads where people ask my opinion.

My opinion is that it looks like something steering related.

Act 300 of 1949

257.710c Bumpers; height limitations; lift blocks; prohibited modifications; construction of section; applicability; definitions.
Sec. 710c.
Para(4) All steering components shall be geometrically arranged to function as original equipment manufacture. Welded pitman arms, drag links, and tie rods are prohibited.

Not a bash, just an FYI in case this law is enforced in your area.

thats what i needed to see. thank you.

now to figure out how to make it work.

someone on another site suggested to weld in the pitman arm then ream it out to the jeep taper.

not sure what to do at this point.

maybe i could ream the jeep end of it out to a ford size and use something ford related that will thread into the sleeve.

Why would you do that when the TRE at the pitman arm is replaceable? Go buy one of the correct size for the pitman arm.

It looks fine. Good penetration on the welds, nice and straight, run it. If you are concerned about running it on the street, don't be. Clean the welds up a bit with a grinder and paint it. If you get stopped by a cop they usually don't know what they are looking for in a modified vehicle. I used to run my V8 4x4 Geo Metro on the street all the time. I've had cops beside me, behind me, etc. without any problems. The key to success is not drive like a retard on the street.

Nuggets: You missed the point of the law. It wasn't put there to be 'another technicality' you can be ticked for. It was done for safety.
04 EDGE: While I have seen worse, you had most of the parts to do it correctly. I would heed the advice that some have said and use it as a trail spare, which you most likely won't ever need if you have it made correctly. Why not contact one of the fab shops here in S.E. Michigan and have it done right. OR ask around, I'm sure you can negeotiate some help (beer appears to be a legal tender!) from folks here who can fabricate it correctly.

I appreciate your opinion but I honestly feel it's ok. The law is designed to keep unsafe components/vehicles off the road. If the letter of the law is followed then you would never see another street rod again.

do you even know how thick the tube is in the middle? I'm not positive but I'm pretty sure those TRE's are CAST IRON and when welded to it does not hold unless done by a very seasoned welder with lots of time on their hands.

are the TRE's slipped into the tube at all or just butt welded? it doesnt even look like the paint and dirt was cleaned off the welded area before welding....
