I was at the last "riots" in 99 or 00, I don't remember what year. Either way I didn't do anything illegal, but my photo was on the stupid campus cable when they were trying to find identities for hundreds of people who were going to be kicked out of msu and or prosecuted.

Sounds like it was the same thing this year, a ton of partying, nothing illegal being done, and then the cops came in with tear gas and the riots started, cars being flipped, bbq tanks tossed into fires. All they did was flush everyone out of CV into the city

when State lost to UNC a couple years back in the final 4, my gf and I went to go get some pizza and got teargassed (not bad, but I can tell you what it smells like). We were smart enough to just get the hell out of there. But they will teargas you for basically having a group of more than 4 or chanting go green, go white.

Time Line
10:25 p.m. Crowd takes over street at Cedar and Watersedge.rown.
12:12 a.m. Officer struck by fireworks in the 200 block of Cedar.
1:27 p.m. Fire reported at River and Victor.
1:23 a.m. Request for additional units at Cedar and Watersedge, crowd has become violent.
1:28 a.m. Request for even more units at Cedar and Watersedge- out of control.
1:32 a.m. Chief Wibert advises officers to pull out, mobilize for dispersing the crowd.
1:39 a.m. Chief Wibert advises to give announcement to disperse.
1:46 a.m. Announcement to disperse read four times on loudspeaker on north side of crowd.
1:58 a.m. Announcement to disperse read at River and Watersedge.
2:03 a.m. Announcement to disperse read twice at Cedar and Watersedge. (windshield smashed on PACE truck as this happens)
2:07 a.m. Smoke and flash bangs launched - little effect on crowd.
2:09 a.m. Fire reported in dumpster at 1128 Victor.
2:16 a.m. First tear gas deployed.
2:51 a.m. Fire reported in dumpster at 251 River.
3:11a.m. Cedar Village reported quiet- few people there.

Looking at the time line that was released, things got ugly before any tear gas was used. I'm in Lansing and all the interviews on the news are of college kids saying it was out of control and the police needed to do something.

I don't doubt that at all. It gets way crazy there a lot.

MSU Idiots riot alot. It's almost one of those things like the coming of spring, You know its gonna happen sometime in the year. This certain situation was an old Tradtion attempted to be brought back called Cedar Fest. Guess why it was shut down in the past? People started rioting.

Anybody who says the Police force was unneccesary (this time around) should check thier eye color and make sure it is not brown. Becaus they are full of Crap. In past times it may have been a bit much. This time around people were openly disrespecting the cops. Throwing beer bottles, firecrackers, ETC...At the officers. If you're that stupid you deserve to get gassed, Tasered, or even beat. Just my opinion.

Also, One of the orginiztions that makes sure students are treated fairly was there. So they monitered the Law enforcement and said openly in the news paper that the cops were justified in what they did.

And from what I heard, Cedar fest involves having a Keg on every floor of the apartments AT LEAST. I'm sure people had thier own kegs, and got plenty drunk. The really funny thing is that in the statistics of Arrests/Tickets half, if not more, of the people were non-MSU Students. I'm glad they helped in keeping MSU's Reputaion up.

I'm really glad I had to work early the next morning so I didn't go but I also heard that they are searching people's facebooks to get them in trouble.

L4CX does have a good point, well over half of the people arrested weren't even MSU students.

The stats I saw said 28 of 52 arrested WERE MSU students, I'm not sure about the number ticketed. Regardless of who was arrested from where, the whole thing wouldn't have started had it not been for an MSU student trying to restart Cedarfest (I'm not positive that it was an MSU student who started it, but it makes sense) and the MSU students who live in Cedar Village having parties in their houses/apartments allowing it to happen.

Just my .02

I do agree Police were needed. But when its widely known for weeks that cedarfest is going to happen...why not have the EL police barge in to stop it or keep it in check sooner? I walked by it and was not surprised by the crowd or "rioting". I deff didnt need the trouble so i stayed out of it. Like already said, most of the problems that ocurr on campus come from "non msu" students. Yes 28 were arrested..Im not justifying the "riot". But it only takes a few idiots to start it all.

The EL police have tried to stop events like this earlier in the past. After the last one two or three years ago they had a bunch of hearings to go over how they handled things. I dont know what the exact findings were or where to find them, but I think they have to handle it like this now because of those hearings.

I mean it was a great pair of overall victories by the MSU rowing team over IU and Notre Dame, but a riot was a little over the top...

yeah, apprently there were tons of ALCU reps onhand to watch for police brutality. I was here for the last "riots" in 2005 this was contained better expect for the wind blowing all the tear gas north across Grand River and up into residential areas.
