I currently tow with a 1500 Suburban....I wish I didn't tho'. It seems to tow my Jeep just fine, but can't handle my camper very well.
Hopefully this summer I'll be picking up a 2500 Suburban with a 454ci or 496ci.

But if you are only going to two 5-6 times a year a 1/2ton is plenty for towing a Jeep on flatbed.

I have towed a lot of trailers with have ton trucks with no problem at all. You can't take off like a bat out of hell but why would you want to anyway.

You didn't say what engine or rear axle ratio the half-ton truck has, but you should do OK with it. I use my Chevy Trailblazer to tow my car hauler trailer loaded with my CJ7, and it tows beautiful. The Trailblazer has a 300 hp V8 and 3.73 gears, for reference. Tow rating on the Trailblazer is 6600 lbs, and my loaded trailer weighs about 5500.

If you find that the trailer lowers the back of the pickup too much when hooked up, you'll probably want to go to a weight-distributing hitch. That will transfer some of the tongue weight to the front axle.

my 03 hemi ram 4x4 4 door hooked up to our 18ft steel deck car hauler with my s10 a quad and a quad in the truck and 4 people in the truck was fine no lack of power passed cars just as good as unloaded..

18 ft trailer, 2000 TJ on 33's equals somewhere in the 6000# range.

Towed last year with a 2007 Jeep Commander, Full time 4WD, 4.7l. Tongue on ball was squirelly at just a tad over 65 mph. With a weight distribution hitch and sway bar it was comfortable up to 80 mph (short test on clear, dry road). Mileage between 10-12 mpg depending on head wind. Over drive off on hilly terrain. Took my tim accelerating but got up to speed by the end of the ramp. Stopping was more than adequate.

This year I have a 2008 1500 Ram reg cab also with the 4.7. Have towed a Neon on the trailer but not the Jeep yet. Felt very good all around.

Seeing how well the Commander did I see no reason the 1500 will not do as well if not better.

3/4 and 1 tons with diesels are great for pulling but really, they are not required when pulling something like a Jeep on a trailer, if the trailer and truck are set up properly. And the smaller trucks are frankly more suitable for every day use for most of us.

318 will still be fine for towing. Though the 3.55 gears won't be the best, they wont be the worst either, probably just wont be using OD much.

Do it right, and invest in a good brake controller(I like my Prodigy, they can be had under $100), and a weight distributing hitch.

On an old dodge, make sure your steering slop isn't bad, like most are(steering shafts, box movement, and worn track bars). And your shocks are good, too.

Mine (96 V10 2500) needs all those things. Comparing this to my old 2000 (V8 2500) which had the camper special rear swaybar, and tight(er) steering, there's a HUGE difference in stability. I'm going to retrofit a rear sway on this truck this summer.

Towing around "here" is a little different than places not flat. I towed with a 1/2 ton chebby silverado that had a long WB which was great, but was also 2WD and sucked gas.

It was used, and pushed, and needed work and money after some tows to E PA couple times. I have since traded it in for a newer vehicle and have no regrets. My "tow rig" only needs to tow a few times a year, so momma gets a better ride for work.

If you want to get a couple years out of it expect to maintain it and cost associated with towing, otherwise I suggest a 4wd only cause I got stuck in the parking lot at Paragon, and good brakes all around.

I tow with my 1/2 ton 4x4 Ram with the hemi, best milage is 12, towing uphill 11.6, at 70mph, I don't even know the trailer is back there untill I see the Zj's headlights in my rear mirror. I'm getting a 3 place trailer, so my tow rig will be bigger, but you should be fine.

I tow with a 1/2 ton '99 tahoe. it works. Really need to have trailer brakes though. When I was flat towing, if I had to make an emegency stop that was from a decent speed (guy running a red light) it would stop good but it pretty much wasted the rotors from the heat.

Rear end is a bit squishy in a tahoe too but that might not be the case in a dodge 1/2 ton pickup

you will be fine occasionally towing with a half-ton.

I have at least a 2k lb trailer that I put my cherokee on. I pull with a 2500 ram van with a 318 V8 and have no problem holding 65-75 mph although I prefer to keep it at the lower end of the spectrum (my trailer kinda sucks). Last trip, I calculated 12.5 mpg on the way home from drummond, the diesel guys in my group towing similar rigs were only getting 14mpg.

you should be absolutely fine. dont let the big diesel guys talk you out of it. the only upgrade I might recommend outside of the standard brake control, might be airbags on the rear----but not necessary at all
