Default Neighbor war

So should I put my foot down or pay the extra $80 to keep the peace?

That is the question, here is the story. 4 weeks ago we had a bilizard hit Cincinnati and dropped 12" of snow :tonka: I was out shoveling the driveway and let the dogs play in the show without their invisible fence R/F collars on. I know stupid.

Well, Jade was in the garage being cold when the next door neighbors dog came out and my lab ran in the street to see meet her. Dixie (my lab) and Fancy ( neighbors shitzu) start backing at each other. Jade (pitbull) thinks in my mind that 1.) I get to eat this little dog that antagonizes me, or 2. I'm going to protect my baby sister and bites her. I feel really bad and stupid for letting them off the collar and offer to pay for all the medicals bills.

$600 later . . . Tom (neighbor) calls me today to ask how I wanted to pay for the last set of x rays and I said I'd call the vet. The vet bill is $200 and I was like "Whoa, for some x-rays, why so much?" They informed me that Tom called them last night because the bandges slid down and she crapped on her self and he "needed" to bring her in. The doctor informed me that she told them they could cut of the bandages, clean her up and bring her in in the morning. Tom insisted and they brought here in for an adittional $80 emergency charge.

I called the doc and asked if it was a medical emergency and she said no and I said I was only paying for the x-rays. . . .

Well . . . you can only imagine how that went over. Tom (50) calls and yells at me and I calmly explain that the doc said it wasn't an emergency and I wasn't paying for it. Chris (30 looser son who lives at home) calls me and cusses me out on the phone about how its all my fault and I should pay for it. He uses the an example where if my car hit his car I would pay for it. I say if we were both responsible and had our dogs on leashes then this wouldn't have happened and since we weren't responsible and it did happen and my dog was the one that bit I'm doing my best at paying vital medical expenses but nothing more.

He goes on to continue to cuss me out and tells me how I don't want to make him and and he's crazy. At this point I hang up the Phone.

So I call my old boss who's a cop for some advice and he says I have to put my foot down like I'm doing and recommends me some fake cameras that blink to "watch" my vehicles and house.

So what do you guys think, should I pay to keep the peace or put my foot down. I informed both Tom and the Vet and I am still willing to pay for bills that are due to the bite but nothing that isn't necessary. The vet said I "should" be good after this last x-ray since everything looked fine.

The kicker is that no one like's Tom and when his other neighbors moved in 2 years ago their bloodhound also bit Fancy.

So all (-and I'm sure because it's me) ludacris comments are welcome

Cliff Notes: My dog bit the neighbors dog and I'm paying the vet bills but won't pay for something that wasn't an emergency 4 weeks later.

I'm just trying to be the better person . . . the good think is that I know in my heart that had I know the outcome of now I would have still offered to pay.

His son is crazy and that's what worries me. All my vehicles are insured so I'd have to pay the deductible if a tire "mysteriously" goes flat but so be it.

You could try to split the 80 with him since his dog was not on a leash either and both owners are truley equally at fault.

You have allready paid a ton of doe so a few more $$ may be worth it to keep a happy neighbor.....all though it sounds like he is the type that will never be happy.

Tuff call. I would try to split the extra 80 with him it was not an emergency the dog just shit on its self big deal kids do it all the time.

I am sure you have all the receipts for all that you payed in retribution. But despite being an ignorant, air headed, lack in good judgement, non-responsible dog owner you should put your foot down

imho if you pay this now you will likely get more "your dog bit my dog" kind of bills.

and you are a better person for doing so, must people out there would say, yeah my dog bit your dog, so what, but you did already pay $600+ and for the fact that he insisted on doggy ER when the vet said he would be perfectly fine to come in the next morning? just sound like he is now trying to take advantage of you and try to get some free doggy health care while he can

that is sad (im not saying wrong on your part) that you actually have to considering helping this guy out because if you dont you think something could happen to your vehical

Both dogs were in the street and unattended?

Offer to split it and tell him this is the end of it. Why? As you said, to settle it in peace.

I made it perfectly clear that if more bills come up like for additional x-rays or anything medical I'm all for paying the bills. But if it wasn't necesarry then I'm not paying. If I pay this $80 then what bout next time he thinks he "has to see the vet NOW" when he could wait till the morning.

Pay the 80 bucks, and be glad that your dog did not bite a person, or someone's kid. I had a dog that used to come into our yard, and growl at my kids. At that time, it became "my dog", and it was handled accordingly. ( I winked at it )

Anybody that buys one of those worthless dogs has a serious problem to begin with. Pay the $80, tell him no more and keep the collars on your dogs.

I'll have to bring that up. He's the guy that's going to say no way but I'll try that option.

I was looking at dog bite law and do you that in most cases you get a one bit not liable rule . . . but if she had bit a person she would be put down, not if and or butts about it.
