Default Clearing out computer files

I was wondering if anyone has used any software to clean out files from a computer. I don't know a ton about computers and I'm not sure if I need to worry about it but this is my problem. I have some kind of virus or spyware because my computer has been acting up for the past few days. I have found someone that is supposed to be good with computers and he said he can remove all the bad stuff and get it back in good working order for about $60 (better than the $199 that Best Buy wants). The thing is I don't know this guy at all and who knows what kind of computer "Geek" he is or what kind of guy he is. I do all of my banking, taxes, and important emailing for business which contain account numbers, registration forms with social security numbers on them etc. on this computer. This guy is going to have my computer for a day or two and I don't want him to have access to any of my information. I was told that there are software programs out there that will wipe out emails, websites visited, passwords stored automatically etc. I have records of the things that I need but most of it can be deleted because I don't need it anymore. Has anyone tried these and is it something I should do?

Well if you don't need the info anymore, just put a fresh copy of your operating system on there. And that should take care of it. However might not, my buddy got a trojan virus on his and could not fix the problem period, even with a refresh, so he just bought a new hard drive and swap out his and now everything runs beatifully.

I have to agree. I use Lavasoft Ad-Aware to get rid of spyware (it's free to individuals), and a good virus scan.

I use Firefox, and there is a choice under "tools" to delete all private data. There is something like it in Explorer, it's under "tools", "internet options."

"start, all programs, accessories, system tools" there is a "disk cleanup" tool that will get rid of a lot of junk too.

Just remember, anyone that knows anything about computers can probably access anything that you have "deleted", because it's still there on the hard drive unless you really know how to get rid of it or it's encrypted.

EVERYBODY should run hijackthis! Even on a new computer.. Clean up your registry, and it makes it a happy computer.

That works great if you are a computer geek like you. I would end up deleting my hard drive with that !

http://www.tolvanen.com/eraser/

or from sourceforge. http://sourceforge.net/projects/eraser/

want something deleted? install it. even with old versions of the app. you can do up to 35 pass gutman level writes to the sectors of the hdd that had your data on it.

unless this geek is NSA level geek, and for $60 per consult he's not, then he's not going to uncover any information you delte with eraser...

and as kelly said - hijack this, avg anti-virus, and/or google the specific malware/virus you find - unless the machine is basically completely incapacitated there will generally be ways to get it cleaned w/out spending any money.

Anyone that you don't trust enough to have cart blanc with your computer doesn't know jack shit enough to be worth $60 per consult IMO.
