302 tuning problems

After getting my 302 in my Ranger, it doesnt wanna run that well. Its a carbed engine with Edelbrock 4 bbl carb. It will start up and run good up to 2500 rpm. Anything above that it backfires and smokes. It seems to rev kinda slow too. The idle seems decent, it says steady. I was just outside messing with it and I reved it up and then it blew the oil cap off the valve cover.

I need some tips

I think there might be too much oil in the crankcase...ill check it once i get my new dipstick. Could that affect the way it runs?

well well...i dont have any vents on my valve covers so i think that explains the system pressure problem.

Now i gotta get the thing tuned..

I only say this becouse you said you dont or cant get the timming lite to work...this is only good for getting you close, and to see how trusting your friend is :miff:

please be carefull if you decied to do this.....there is nothing cool about messing with your friend while he's under the hood trying to HELP you out....

seams like a stock 302 in a ranger should rev 6,500 and make power all the way to 5,800 at least....but to each there own....
you may be right...but idk. My motor has the stock cam. Im new to v8's so idk what rpm ranges are correct.
