Easiest way is it stop exhaust flow into the EGR cooler by welding up the passage from the passenger side up-pipe to the EGR cooler. I have a couple up-pipes if you'd like to modify one and keep your stock one... You will have to run an SCT or other programmer to shut off the EGR so you don't trip a code. The next thing to do is ditch the EGR cooler altogether, a little more noticeable if you do have to take it in for service.....

Chad is right the EGR cooler is what causes 90% of the problems that the 6.0L had. I had an 05 and one it started puking a little antifreeze...I was pissed 80K stock miles and Im thinking the head gaskets let go. Dealership replaced the headgaskets to find out that they were fine, and it was a bad egr cooler. Ran like a raped ape after that.

I suggest doing a few things for your 6.0L

1. Get rid of the superchip or any other chip other then an SCT XCAl2...then get in contact with DJperformance in Miami, or Innovative diesel and get some custom tunes for your truck. This will do several things that will spin a positive change to your truck. First you will feel power that you have never felt before. Second the trans parramaters are much better and a lot safer for your trans. Lastly they will shut off your EGR valve this will allow you to block off your EGR cooler or remove without throwing a code.

2. BLOCK OF THE THE PORT ON THE EGR COOLER. If you really want to do it right completely remove the EGR cooler. This will not allow heat to transfer from conduction.
passenger side manifold-uppipe to EGR port.

open

welded shut

3. Make sure that they checked your oil cooler. This also can cause issues in the 6.0L.

4. once you get this all done, you will have a running SOB. Then when all the guys tell you that your 6.0L is a POS, you can tell them to go get the baddest tuner made for a cummins or a duramax and beat there pants off. Granted this will only work if they have the stock trans.

Here is my 05 with a SCT XCAL2 with custom looney tune, Volant intake

good luck.

barry1me, thank you!! I am very interested in learning more from you guys!! I just got a phone call from the dealer and it looks like MattBMiller was right on the money when he initially called head gasket!! They tell me they have to remove the cab and replace both head gaskets and head bolts and it will be a few more days!! It figures, they called me yesterday to tell me I would be able to pick it up today so I made plans to tow my trailer to Ohio this weekend!!!!!!!! Oh well. Would you recommend having them install ARP bolts as opposed to the stock ones??

no prob man...FWIW I highly recomend friendly ford in Monroe for diesel work. The standard is to pull the cab to do the HG's much easier that way. ARP's are nice, but I dont feel they are neccasary. I ran a hard tune on my truck and never had a problem. If you ever have a head gasket issue in the future with ARP's ford will not warranty your truck. IMHO I would use the OE head bolts. Not many dealerships no how to install them correctly too. They require much higher torquing then the OE bolts. There are a few guys on thedieselgarage running stock headbolts and running in the mid 12's in the quarter. The number one thing I recomend is blocking the EGR cooler, or removing it completely that will do more good then the ARP's. If your looking for an SCT programmer get ahold of me, I still have mine and its for a 05....I also have a like brand new Volant ram air intake for an 05.

I really appreciate your input. I did a little research and just got done telling the dealer to just use the OE bolts, so it was reassuring to see that you posted that!! I am VERY interested in doing the EGR delete and an SCT programmer. I was never really impressed with the Superchips programmer, the dealer I bought the truck from had just installed it the week I bought the truck so I was kinda stuck with it but it will NOT be going back on. Do you no longer have your truck?? What would you want to get for the programmer and intake??

So the dealer told me I would have this thing back on Friday, they call me Friday afternoon to tell me they had the wrong head gasket, don't know how that can happen, but they say I will definitely get it back today. Just called me to tell me the passenger side head is warped and they are waiting for the head to come in tomorrow morning!!! I tell the dealer that I will be picking the truck up tomorrow afternoon if I have to bring a flat bead!! UGH!! Getting irritated!!!!! OK, my rant is over, I feel better..... slightly!!

It took dealership 3 weeks to do my HG's and EGR cooler on my truck. That was due to having to pull the heads and have them checked out to see if they were bad.

Well, they call me at about 5 to tell me they got it together and took it for a drive and it died, so I drop in on them and they say that it is reading no oil pressure and they will have to remove the f ing cab AGAIN because they are going to have to replace the oil pump!! I ask them if they are sure the oil pump is bad and all they can say is " it must be"!!!! What are the odds of that happening right after the heads were replaced?? I told him I don't buy it and ask why they didn't check the heads right when they took it apart and all he can say is "they were supposed to, but I wasn't here that day". "So your mechanic can't do the right thing unless you are here???" " I don't believe he knows what he is doing!!!!!!!!" Does this "mechanic" have a clue? Or am I being unreasonable??

If your paying for this, I suggest you get your truck and take it to a different dealer for repairs.

I will only have to pay the $100 deductible, but it is still frustrating as hell!! I can't help but think if they knew what the hell they were doing they would have gone after everything that all of you seemed to know to go after right from the start. No more than 4 or 5 days tops!! Hell, the heads pays 18 hrs. according to the dealer. They had the truck last Monday.

Thats the BS they pulled with me too. What dealership are you at? If you took it to friendly then Im beginning to think they dont have clue how to work on these 6.0's. They did the HG's on mine, then took it for a ride and it still puked, then they pulled the cab again, and then had the heads send out to get checked if they were ok. That took about 4 days, then after they put that all back together they found out that the EGR cooler was the problem from the beginning.

It is at Milnes in Lapeer. They called me about an hour ago to tell me they had it all torn down again and that the oil pump is shot. Has metal in it and they will have it done tomorrow afternoon. We'll see. I think he did something wrong when he was in there. Hard to believe that the oil pump was about to go too!!!

make sure to have them change the oil cooler too, cuz that will be shot too. IF they dont replace it, raise some havoc!

Well, raising hell hasn't done me much good so far. I did get pretty shitty with them last night and told them I wasn't leaving until they gave me a truck since they still can't seem to get mine done right!! So now I am driving a 2002 F-250 extended cab short bed. WOW!! MUCH different than mine!!! As I was walking toward the door to leave I told them I had a 32' Pace American trailer and a lot of towing to do, so maybe now they will want to get mine done so that they can get theirs back!!!

So, can the egr system be eliminated without warrenty issues????

BTW Sorry about your problems. My buddy owns an 04 6.0, but I like my old rusty 12valve cummins.
