Default car insurance vs. driving record

What is the law for insurance companies using points to determine your rates? I thought there was a recent law change that only allowed them to use your tickets against you for 2 years from the date of the occurance. Just looked at my progressive bill and they are dinging me for a speeding ticket I got July 30, 2005.

Points only count against your license for 2 years. Insurance can go further back as far as I know.

Shoot. I once had a claim paid for my daughter's emergency room visit from a roll over accident where she was a passenger show up in an insurance report 10+ years after the accident.

Insurance companies keep records of that stuff forever. Not sure how much time must pass before they stop using it, but you can bet they have everything you ever did wrong in their databases.

different companies have different policies. I use an agent to find what is cheapest for me, the one I have only goes back 2 years, since all my tickets are from a few years ago.

Farm Bureau has a table for points/months. Most common tickets are 2 points going back 24 months, higher violations like 16+ over speeding and at-fault accidents count for 36 months or more and at least 3 points, alcohol offenses count for 60 months. The points are not the same as your license points either. Claims are part of your "Clue Report", and they come into play regarding your "insurance score discount" not "safe driver discount".

Can't insurance companies go back as far as 3 years?

They can go back as far as they want, there is no law on how they use their records, the only thing that matters is their premium vs. another company's premium and how many customers vs. payouts. Insurance companies are betting on their customers making them money, so they weed out the customers with poor records by raising their premiums.
