Default another stay/leave michigan post *asking advise*

Her is my situation in short. In 1.5 years i will be a physical therapist and my wife will be a physicians assistant. We live just outside of grand rapids and for those of you who don't know it is one of the few cities in MI (if only) that has seen an increase in population etc in the near past. It is also 'supposed' to be the midwest destination for medical services by like 2015 or something

the question is would you stay in an area with lots of (medical field) jobs in a crappy economical state, or move to a better economy state? its sad to say, but this will be my first J-O-B that is for real (besides summer work, have been in school since i was 5). We are trying to plan our financial and career futures, and this board has people with WAY more experience than we have obviously. We are in a 'breakable' land contract for our home that we can buy at market price when we graduate, and our 'rent' will go toward our purchase price (roughly 18,000 at that point, from 6.88% student loan $$). It is a decent house in the 125K range in jenison. there are 6 houses within a 300 yard radius of my home for sale, so we'd have to sit on this house for quite some time before moving, but i see it as a good option.

Jobs are also a bit more lucrative in other states, but in west michigan we are within 2.5 hours of all of our immediate family. (GR and CHI).

This is all assuming that I do not decide to practice PT in the military.

Apparently, they are starving for medical persons in the Metro Detroit area. But I dont recommend living around here. People are real stuck up about themselves around here.

it's nice to find some people that visit this site looking for realistic opinions, instead of constantly causing .

I currently work at a hospital, I have also been informed of the new medical mile project centered in Grand Rapids.

it really falls into personal preference, I was recently offered a job causing relocation to Vermont. 40% increase in pay and they pay relocation cost. my wife doesn't really want to move, but says it's my decision. she is very close with her family. I told her we at least need to check it out and not make a blind decision.

life sometimes looks greener some where/place else until you get there and it's the same. life is what you make of it, if you find the right partner and can work together on a like goal, all the better it should be.

I wish I could give you some advice, but I pretty much fly by the seat of my pants.

For what it's worth, i like Michigan. It's going through some tough times, but I think it will bounce back. People will always need medical personnel. If you were in automotive or production of some sort, I may suggest trying another state.

Then again, if you want to broaden your horizons, best to do it while your young. You can always move back. Hate to look back in 30 years and say you wish you had tried.

See, I told you I'm not much help.. :tonka:

Good luck!

Adam - Just be sure to take cost of living into consideration (I'm sure you have or will be). West Michigan is relatively reasonable for living expenses. I'm sure you guys are aware just how pricey Chicago is, just as an example.

With GR on-track to being a HUGE medical mecca, that would have to weigh heavily with my decision. I'm sure there are a lot of opportunities elsewhere, but it's just something to think about.

Also, I'm not sure if you guys are thinking about having kids down the road, but proximity to grandparents may be another thing to consider.

Good luck,
Craig

I would agree with all three points made above. The GR area CERTAINLY is not SE Michigan and healthcare will always be necessary. Its a good field to be in, and your locale seems good. I would be hesitant on the land contract though - if you really love the house, buy it. if not, dont.

FWIW, my Mother In Law is pretty sick. They drove to U of M for years, until the big new cancer center got built in GR- They live in Ludington, and it was a huge blessing to be able to be two hours from home for them.
What's going on in Grand Rapids, Medical-wise is amazing. I know the economy sucks right now, but eventually it will get better, and being close to family is pretty important. Grand Rapids seems like the best large city in the state to bet on, from what I've seen.

land contract is negotiable. it is actually owned by my parents, they bought it to possibly rent down the toad to GVSU students etc (12 min from GR, 8 from allendale). and with people not buying houses, condo's and rentals seem to be popular these days

Michigan isn't as bad as it seems. Like someone mentioned above, cost of living is a huge deal, and it is pretty reasonable here. You guys are in a really nice area. I don't think you are going to find anywhere with the potential of work that you have there, in such a nice area, that doesn't cost double to live and own a house.

Pick a place where you like to live and live there. That is the best recommendation that I can give you.
