Default terrible experience

What a wasted weekend.....
I had a terrible experience with a board member over on corvette forum over buying his corvette. I don't even know where to begin with this story, please bear with me as it is long.

The details: I saw his car on the site and called cw1969-427 (Carl) about 3 months back and said I was interested. We corresponded several times and he sent me several pictures (about 12) and all the engine info. I told him I was very interested and wanted to come test drive it and pick it up. He lives 2.5 hrs west of Chicago and I live in Cleveland. He said he wanted to wait since the weather was bad and he didn't want to drive the car in the salt (understandable). We agreed on the first week of April for me to come up and see it/pick it up. He seemed like a friendly reasonable guy on the phone.

Anyway, I get an email from him thursday saying he needs to sell the 68 now as he just bought another car. I immediately call him and change all my weekend (St. Pattys day) plans to come see the car. He only wanted cash, so I go to my bank and get all cash (made me nervous to carry that much). I drive 500 miles ONE WAY (and drop about $300 in gas) to see this car, and I pick up a U-haul flatbed trailer on the way for $130.

So, I get to his place and he opens the garage, and I immediately notice several problems that he never mentioned. The windshield had a crack, the windsheild wiper cover had bubbled and chipped paint all the way across, There were several peices of chrome missing, there was a pool of power steering fluid under the car, the headlights didn't open, the interior was rough (but he had made that clear previously so I was not upset) on and on. Not only that, when we had agreed upon a price a while back, he said he would include a hardtop with the car (I was relying on this as I needed to tow it back). He goes on to say that it flew off the car last week and broke and that he sold it to some guy a couple days ago... uh... ok. It started snowing very lightly out and I told him that I really needed to take it for a test drive before I would buy it (which I told him before I came). He said "no problem, this weather won't hurt the car.

We take it out and I realize that the power steering doesn't work at all. I test drove it for about 10 minutes and not only did the car certainly not have the 450hp (he said it was a souped up 66 427 vette motor) he said it did, but he freaked out when I gave it a little gas (got it up to 30mph ). Let me say this as well, I was very curteous the whole time, never even mentioned all of the things he didn't tell me.

We get back to his place and I pull it back into the garage. Well I say "let me go sit in my car and call my dad and tell him about the vette and I'll come right back and give you my decision". My dad has had several of these and he knows his stuff. No sooner did those words leave my mouth than he starts walking inside and screams at me. says, "I'm not selling this car to you!!! You just wanted to hot rod it! Who the hell drives a classic colletible corvette in this weather anyway, F--- YOU!!! This car is a great deal and you come waste my time!!!" I was obviously serious about buying as I had a trailer behind my truck and the cash and I drove almost 10 hrs one way.

Well, I'm standing there stunned as I didn't understand what was going on. So I say "hold on, I think maybe you misunderstood me, I'm just going to talk it over with my dad, I trust his opinion". The guys says F--- You again to me and slams the doors in my face.

So, not only did I drive about 1000 miles round trip, waste all that gas, (the uhaul place refunded the trailer thank God), take the risk of carrying all that cash with me and waste my whole weekend, but I got yelled at over a completely misrepresented vehicle. Terrible business experience.

This guy was a lunatic and a scammer and I got screwed.

Wow, sorry to read all that. Some people just suck at selling things and don't care about the finer details. You oughta make a bash post over on the vette forum.

It could have been a lot worse. You could be bitching about the corvette you bought and how you got the shaft.

Sorry to hear about your bad experience.

I didn't know lived that far away and had a Corvette...

I've sold many "project cars" and while it stings to have the shortcomings pointed out, I usually try to be pleasant about it. Unless the potential buyer is just being a dick.

Look at it as dodging a bullet I guess.

Wow, That's just horrible. Sorry to hear that. I really don't like people like that. I wish there was some way to take those kind of people to court. But unfortunately you can't sue for inconvenience. Or at least I don't think you'd Get anywhere.

I would hold off on Bashing this guy on the other forum. Try and get into contact with him (which I'm sure are trying to do) and figure out why he acted the way he did. Then Politely inform him that you will probably be letting everyone know. Maybe He'll be willing to work something out. I'm not sure what that would be. Maybe a Refund for the Gas money or something. If not, Then Have some fun and let people know what he did.

:edit: oh, if you already did start a thread please let us know. I'm sure it would be fun to read.

I actually called him about 20 min after I left because I wanted an explanation, but he was just as rude and cussed me out. I told him I would be posting my experience over there and he hung up. So weird.

Here is the post at Corvetteforum.com, I don't believe he has seen it yet, but I'm sure he will respond when he does.

Wow, that sucks, but I think the people on both boards are right- yes, you wasted your weekend, but it sounds like it would have been more hassle than it was worth to get the car looking nice again.

Besides- now you have a TON of cash for St Paddy's day :tonka:

Sorry to hear that the Vette was misrepresented (I hate when people do that), and that the guy failed to mention that we was bi-polar. It really bites that you spent all that time/money for nothing.
