Default extreme 4x4??????

i was just watching last weeks extreme 4x4 and they actually gave some good tips for newbies to wheeling, driving and safe recovery, kinda.

they had to apologize beause on a previous show they wrapped there winch cable around a tree and got tons of complaints about it. they showed the correct way to use tree savers and snatch blocks.

they also showed how to use a hi lift jack safely and how to use it as a winch, i question the safety of that because they were using chains and with having to operate the hi lift your in danger.

then the funny thing happen there toyota caught on fire and the guy was like o crap we dont have an extinguisher(?) . then he says o its only powersteering fluid it'll burn off, what a dumb ass. Not a good lead by example technique.

At the end they also used the hi lift to push the tuck away from a rock to get around with out damage. whats the thoughts on that.

chains are OK for a pull that dosn't require snapping...so for a constant load a chain rated for the correct lbs. is ok.

I know the pirate4x4 were giving the guy shit about the unsafe recovery he did in a prior show.

I've never been a big fan of that show. In reality, it's no different than any other type of cable network show.

I watched that too. Seem to be like the averge moron on the trail, or they were just trying to show you what not to do.
I don't know bout that there hi-lift situation, not me, I've used a hi-lift coulpe times to get unstuck, by jacking up the truck and pushing it over from the rut, but that's about it. I use a cable puller one time (with straps) and well just glad it wasn't a chain that broke. :tonka:

I never watch those shows anymore. You can find better stuff on gl4x4 or pirate. Than if you want videos, goto youtube and find whatever the heck you want.

the funny thing is that even if he is the typical moron on the trail they still have to edit these things and the idiot behind the computer and legal people should have caught it before it is aired giving bad publicity for wheeling.....not that i am perfect but millions of people dont watch me.

I'm no wheeling expert (not even a little) but it seems kinda dumb to me to get any kind of advice from a TV show.

Its a good show that tries to promote a positive image of the sport. The hosts and build crew are pretty damn capable.

Plus they actually are fabbing stuff, rather than just bolting on stuff from catalogs like some of the shows like hot rod tv, and trucks. Granted, its cool to see cool parts, sometimes, too.

Watch videos on youtube? We don't own 65" tvs to watch grainy 4" videos on the computer...

Practically everyone has more wheeling experience than I do, and mine is all from 20+ years ago.....

But having seen "how to" shows on things I HAVE experience in, I still wouldn't use TV as a reference.

Personally, if I wanted to go gain knowledge of things off-roady, I'd go with someone who does go often and can help in person.
Television is primarily entertainment IMHO

No, because they are there in person.

Even with my limited experience, I know enough that what works in one situation won't work in another. I never said they didn't know what they are doing, just that TV shows are slanted more to entertainment than information.
