It shouldn't be much different than normal for them, they have a couple week shutdown to retool over the summer anyways, just this time it's all at the same time.

If this is mandatory time off why would you burn your vacation pay for it. You should collect unemployment for those 2 weeks like all the hourly people do. I know it is only $362 a week, but you would still be able to take your vacation on your own schedule.

I know Paul is making teh funny, but max vacation is 25 days after 20 years of service. NBU Salary can buy or sell an additional week. Not sure if that applies to BU.

Engineering staff and those that support them have never had a shut down due to plant re-tooling. Paul is talking about design leaders. BU designers are talented (for the most part) and educated white color salary employees. They also do not have shutdowns due to re-tooling.

Also at Chrysler, not all plants shutdown every year. If a product line is ongoing there is little reason to re-tool. Most changes can be handled with minimal downtime. Re-tooling shutdown happens when there is significant change to the product and can last months instead of weeks. Then there are also shutdown to adjust inventory.

But there has never been a complete summer shutdown at Chrysler in the 23 years I have been there.

Kim, this is (as we know it now) a mandatory VACATION shutdown. If you have no vacation time available, you are to either make arrangements with your management (whatever that means) or you are out of luck. This is not a shutdown as most understand it. This is not a 2 week lay-off. Oh, and $362 a week is not a lot at all when you consider some of the salaries these people have. Especially when it not something you plan for in any kind of advance time frame.

There is a lot of grumbling going on about this. One thing I have heard over and over again is it would not be so bad if it weren't for everything else going on. There are many of us wondering if we will have a job through the summer or to the end of the year. There is wholesale replacement of American workers being carried out at Chrysler. Contract houses have changed, and the new "kid in town" is bringing in their own workers instead of giving the existing contract employees a shot at the jobs. This company does not seem to recruit in the U.S. at all, at least by my observation. And direct positions are simply being eliminated. Not that there will not be a need to do the job, but the position will be eliminated. Oh, yea, and then you have to train your replacements. Lot of people wondering what they are going to do next. And for many long time employees, it is not about what your qualifications are, it is about who is going to hire someone in their late 40's, 50's and 60's for any kind of a decent paying job.

Guess I need to brush up on my knowledge of the language of India and still plan on saying Tata to my job.

Gotta love the H-1B visa.

I like that.. for the most part.. I have to say that some of the designers I work with are extremly talented.. We go from Concept to Reality faster than most places go for a cup of coffee.. We just lost one really good guy last week due to the bump back rights of the designers laid off a month ago.. I can tell you either way .. I'll be outta vacation time come July so they can do what they need to do.. I'll take the layoff but I'm sure not taking a chance of having a week left and them saying. ok 1 week vacation 1 week layoff or something like that.. Guess we'll all have to play it out by ear.. Sounds like big changes are coming if you listen to half the rumors
