There is a tag on the front of the axle cover that will have the information that you need, If the tag is gone, then take the cover off and look at the gears for a stamp#
or count the number of teeth on the ring gear. that should tell you.
all XJ's came with a couple of different gear ratio's. must common is 3:55's.

Hope this helps.

Your transmission and motor decide what gear ratio you have. Let us know, and we can probably tell you.

Most 4.0L Manuals had 3.07s
Most 4.0L Autos had 3.55s and sometimes rarely 3.73s
Most 2.5L Manuals has 4.10s
Some 2.5L Autos had 4.56s

Hope that helps, I believe all that's right.

quick easy way, you can jack up the rear and put it in nuetral and as you spin the rear tire count the revalutions of the drive shaft compared to the revs of the tire.

3:1 its probably 3.07
3 1/2:1 its probably 3.55 and so on.
