Are we talking microscope small or can it be done by the naked eye and a small pencil iron. I can solder pretty good but not something that requires special tools that I don't have

my uncle lives in oxford, and owns a communications business. he solders the internals on radios all the time, he has a special solder gun with a vacuum on it to suck up all the unused solder. i will look for his number.

Heres a big photo

you can see where I touched my solder gun to the ribbon to see if I could melt it. of course its some funky heat resistant plastic. It will need to be exacto knifed down to the copper and soldered from the ribbon going up to the terminal board to the bottom left.

After you scrape off the plastic stuff can you just solder a piece of wire across the gap?

Or just bypass the broken piece with a wire and solder it in at the beginning and end.

I will do it for ya if needed. I am closer than chicago.

the ribbon goes to 12 LED's. i've already taken the LCD apart to discover I couldn't solder a jumper cable. It has to be soldered on that 3/4" piece of ribbon.

From what I've read online, after you scrape the plastic off, you can solder to it, but it has to be a very percise soldering setup which I don't have

how important is it that it works afterwards?

that shit can sometimes not come off, and or need to be removed and have just jumper wires soldered in place

I had it firmly held, and using a large mag glass, and the edge of a razor blade, able to scrape off the covering.

This is my pda, which stores 99% of my contact information that I've acquired over the last 7 years. close to 10,000 entrys. Its pretty important that it works when its done.

I put password protection on it, so I can't even dock with it now because the lcd doesn't work, so I can't write in the p-word

dude thats such a great idea! Atleast if anything it will work long enough to retrive the data from it... than try to get it fixed.

I put together a computer for my TBI setup... and had to solder all the resistors, diods, caps, leds, etc, onto a blank board. My dad bought me a nice soldering station with a dial to adjust the heat range. Really nice small tip. Can be bought for around $30?
