Default Winching, what am I doing wrong

Everytime I try to help someone in a ditch I pull the parking break turn it off put it in gear and as soon as the winch is under a some stress my jeep rolls forward? The people are looking at me like, "you don't know what your doing do you?" I feel like I should be standing there saying, "eeeee awwwww!" For f*ck sakes!

I'd like to be able to get someone out of the ditch before AAA shows up and asks me to move aside!

Leave it to the tow truck drivers

Are you putting it in 4wd?

Typically I leave the jeep running, 4wd, foot on the brake. If that is not enough then often times you need to strap the back of the jeep to a tree to keep from just dragging the unstuck vehicle.

I know you are excited to use the new winch, but seriously, side of the road recovery is best left to the tow trucks.

You shut the jeep off? Are you supposed to do that? I would thing you want it running to keep the power up for the winch. But I don't have a winch so I don't know.

Go back to physics class lol.

If you're going to pull someone out of a ditch, you need to make greater resistance on your vehicle then the dude in the ditch.

Strap your jeep to a tree, or something like that.

I do that so I can have it in gear to keep it from rolling

Gotcha. Didn't think about that. But, with the trans in gear, parts are allowed to move, hence it rolling. With it in park, it will slide, but put force on your parking pawl.

If you were going down the road and shut off your engine with it in drive, you roll. For a while anyway.

Your parking brake is shot. Welcome to the wrangler world :tonka:

Seriously, leave the thing running and strap yourself to a tree. If you can't anchor yourself than you may as well leave it to the tow truck drivers. You're not equipped for ditch pulling.

I thought about that maybe the parking brake cable is stretched, I know I should let the tow guys do it but I feel like if I'm not in a rush to get some where the guilt will kill me. Karma will eat me alive.

Don't shut it off or you will hava a dead battery, and need the tow truck yourself. Most times I sit in the drivers seat and rev it to keep the voltage up.

Doing what you are attempting will not work in most cases. Even if you are on dry pavement with your foot on the brake, unless the helpless mom is barely stuck, you will slide and she will stay put.

I almost lost a hand once hooking up a strap to pull someone and another vehicle came along and hit the stuck vehicle. I've never attempted to be the good semaritan since.

It sounds like you are just learning to do recovery yourself and you are not experienced enough to be doing roadside recovery.

x100......... leave it to the tow truck drivers.

I completely understand if my jeep is sliding forward I was just wondering why it was rolling forward. I think it's a bad e-brake. I was also trying to help the ditch stucks to get practice for the trail. I guess I'll keep in on the trail.

If it's in gear and still rolling then its turning the motor over still (if its a manual which I'm assuming because you shut it off)... Poor compression?

Are you attaching your cable to a KNOWN secure tow point on the stuck vehicle? You are standing outside, in between the two vehicles, correct? Anything draped over the cable? Sounds to me like you are on your way to losing a leg, arm or your head.
Seriously, learn how to do recovery the right way. Hands on, in person with an experienced person or group. Reading about recovery on the net and trying it out on a stranger is only going to get you hurt, killed or sued.

Not to mention illegal, I got a ticket for pulling someone out several years ago. don't remember the exact wording but more or less for creating a traffic hazard seeing how I didn't have 500 flashing lights and not be licensed (?). I wasn't even on the road, my truck was completely off on the shoulder to get traction in the gravel.
