Default popup thoughts again

I have the opportunity to get a popup since I've put off getting a motorhome for a while. I'm curious though if anyone has towed with their jeep. My thought was if the camper had brakes and you were a sane driver it would be alright provided the weight was kept down as much as you could. Thoughts?

just let me know when you exceed the manufacturers recommendation on your lifted SWB jeep with oversized tires. That way I can stay out of your way and keep my family safe.

Well, an XJ is rated for 5k towing though because of wheelbase. I know I have the power to pull one. Just curious the stability with an RE 4.5" lift and 35's on a Rubi setup.

with the same lift (short arm?)

I once towed a commercial lawn mower (Exmark 23 horsepower 52 cut for reference) on a small single axle landscape trailer/utility trailer.

35-45+It was hairy.

I towed this summer my boat (way too long for the jeeps short wheelbase) to the gas station (25mph streets) with 4.5" lift and 34's.

Again anything over 35 was hairy.

The boat pushed the jeep worse I think due to its length. But way more manuverable at the pumps, the reason I did it.

I have no idea how light a pop up is and if it is doable, but stay within the man. rec. tow ratings for anything over a 35 mph ride.

I was hoping brakes would help quite a bit on the popup. Maybe even load control bars as well.

Maybe you should re-think the whole idea and realize towing with a wrangler sucks?

I think you should just take the plunge and buy my motor home and tow your jeep. Much safer for you, your family, and everyone on the road for that matter. :tonka:

Why not buy a motor home to tow the jeep?? I understand that answer will probably be cost but I think that's a much safer and smarter idea.

Edit: 1 2 3 jinx, bearlys2005 owes me a coke ( I think that's how the game works :tonka:)

I think you should buy the $2000 popup in the for sale section, throw it in the back of your F150 and tow your TJ.

A lifted wrangler any way. My dad and I pulled my scamper up to Mancelona in November full of gear and food for a week and that went down the road nice for a TJ that is stock but don't think the ride would have been enjoyable lifted

Eh I have towed all kinds of shit with my YJ, a lot of it in the 2-4k range and as long as it was weighted properly so it didn't sway it towed great. The only trailer I have pulled that didn't pull well was my dads single axle 16' trailer empty, and that was because it was almost weighted 50/50 and I didn't have a big enough drop hitch, it would get swaying at just over 60 and scare the shit out of you.

I used to pull Palamino pop-up behind it and didn't even know it was there, I knew it was there with the 4 cyl (acceleration only), but not the V8. Never swayed, tracked straight and braking was fine.

mine works fine with the jeep. but since i have 33's and 373 gears hills get a little slow if they are really long though.

I personally think pop-ups are stupid. I can see why you want it due to less weight to tow behind a Jeep, but it's even more of a PITA than a tent. It's a big tent that you tow.

Skip it and go straight for a solid camper.

Pop ups are easier to store in your driveway/behind your house for something of compareable size in a hardside.

They are a helluva lot easier to put up in the wind/rain too then a tent, and your not sleeping on the ground. I realized that when I went back to a tent and had to set it up in 45mph winds at Mackinac last year.
