they aren't closed as in marked closed or burm/barricade off. But there is one DNR officer on the island ticketing anybody he sees on the steps. Technically the steps dont comply with the "passable by a conventional 2wd vehicle".
That's just what I've read recently.

Sorry, but I am one who would climb those steps in front of the DNR officer just to get a ticket and take it to court to have a definite ruling on the matter

Yup I ran them last summer also and found out later that they were giving out a $300.00 fine for anyone caught on them. If they want people to stay off why don't they just put up a sign?

I just watched the video, I was at work before and our filters blocked it. It was all fine and good at the beginning. But then with the guy running over the trees, driving on the beach, and the high speed water running, they went too far. Especially driving on the beach.

I'm not sure what 'ruling' per say you are looking for but the law states it pretty clear.

http://www.state.mi.us/orr/emi/admin...Dpt=NR&RngHigh

229.921 Rule 21 (i) spells out the 2WD rule requirement, which has the greatest impact on Full Size users, (i.e. Jeeps, Trailblazers, Land Rovers, etc.) in Michigan. Aside from the one private facility on Drummond Island, Turtle Ridge, there are no challenging opportunities in this state for Full Size vehicles. It is this stipulation that forces us to travel outside Michigan to find challenging places to play. As hard as we try, we fail to find Legislators who are cognizant of our plight who will work with us to get the laws changed to make Michigan more tourism and recreation friendly state.

I don't think it really does. I think you are referring to the definition of a forest road:

Quote:
(i) "Forest road" means a hard surfaced road, a gravel or dirt road,
or another route capable of being traveled by a 2-wheel drive
4-wheeled conventional vehicle designated for highway use, but does not
include an interstate, state, or county highway.
This is no where near cut and dry. It doesn't say you "can't use 4 wheel drive". And what exactly is a 2-wheel drive 4-wheeled conventional vehicle? In some situations my Ram in 2 wd would be able to travel a path that my minivan, also 2 wd could not. Both are stock, conventional vehicles. Then in other cases my minivan, being front wheel drive, might be able to better travel some terrain. My Jeep, in 2 wd, would be able travel much harsher terrain, including the steps, than my mother in laws Malibu.

I also would run the steps and take the ticket. Based on past experience, I don't think it would make it to a judge....none of my past tickets have. I do not believe they want case law set on this matter.

I would attempt to climb it in two wheel drive. According to myself, my jeep is conventional.

It's not whether YOU can drive it in 2WD, but rather can the officers grandma do it? And NOT with your Jeep, rather an 81 Buick.
